This just happened...
Me: Right, that's the Counting House fight done. I'll swap out Jaheira and Shadowheart and head across the city to wrap up the murders...
Dolor: Blah blah blah I like murder blah blah blah I mean I really like murder blah blah blah
Me: I'd forgotten how long he does all this pound shop Hannibal Lecter stuff... hurry up and get on with the fighting!
[One fight later, in which just to down Gale, Dolor runs out in to the street and gets killed by the guards]
Me: Right, done. End the day and that's it for this BG session. Click on the campfire and....
Vlaakith: Mwahahaharr! Obey me or else!
Me: What another cutscene? in fact, I'll just nip to the bathroom while she speechifies...
Vlaakith: I will eat your face or something! Mwahahaharr!
Me: Right, that's that. Really end the day now.
[Someone in camp wants to speak to you]
Me: Lae'zel of course and Karlach too... okay
Karlach: Let's go on a date right now! In the middle of the night!
Me: Pffffft... Could have timed this better - but I can't turn her down really. I hope this doesn't take too long...
[Sexy Cutscenes]
Me: Aww! But it really, reall is time to end the day now!
The Emperor: Oh, I must have let my mind wander...
Me: Seriously what??? Spacebar through this and just click the go away option. Is that it? Nobody else? Sure? Half an hour since I clicked on the campfire the first time!

And then when you try to shut down your computer for the night, Microsoft starts updating the OS ... "Do Not Turn Off Your Computer".

One of the great things about BGIII is that you can use quick save in the middle of a conversation, then exit and come back later.

Also, one can switch off all "sexy" scenes.

I had a confusing sequence just now, ending act 1.

I cleaned up Creche Y'lek and went to Lady Esther to sell the loot, but she didn't have enough cash. So I sold as much as possible and then fast-travelled to the myconid colony to sell the rest to Blurg.

But I ended up in camp instead of the Myconids. When I wanted to leave camp to continue to Blurg, I got the message "You can't fast travel right now".
I didn't find any reason for this in the campsite, so the only thing left to do was to take a long rest (even if I didn't want to at that time) and hope that I could travel again afterwards.
That was when Voss's scene triggered. After going through this, I still couldn't fast travel. I tried long rest again and then we slept the night and woke up.
At none of the 2 long rest choices did I need to select food.
After waking up, I "left camp" expecting to return to Lady Esther, but I ended up in the Myconid colony.

Why would I want to do that?

Exactly my thought ☺

(back to topic: I often use quick-save even mid-conversation, just because I really have to stop)

What you descibed is what I'd call "normal". The lock on travel and Long Rest without using food happens when Voss or Gandalf are about to visit and you jump between locations (Rosymorn Trail and Wilderness&Underdark are two different locations).

In context of this thread, obviously to save time.
