Barbarian is not a good combo with any spellcaster. You cannot cast spells nor can you concentrate on spells while raging.
Not sure why an old PC would be the problem, I never had any issue whatsoever in regards to game crashes with BG3 on an older Alienware notebook.
Did you maybe not get the latest drivers ? Especially graphics needs to be up to date, in my experience.
