On the Playstation the highlight option like ldo58 mentioned is to HOLD the right toggle stick down (that shows dead bodies and other loot) that is "Show World Information"
Alternatively you can HOLD the X button (that opens a menu of items which are around your character which you can then select other options to Loot or Examine, it doesn't let you send to camp through this way though), this is "Active Search".
I do agree that more accessibility improvements would make the game more user friendly for a larger user base!
