I have been away from the game for awhile but will start a new game when patch 8 arrives.
Is there any mod for making customized party members nowadays?

Im going to run a mod so I can have a party of 6 PCs.

You don't mention the platform you play on. On PC I've been using the "custom companions" from Nexus for a long time and I 'm very happy with it. You can create a new companion at any point in the game. You don't have to go to Whithers to start the operation, and have all the character creation options available.

Yes, that is correct. All these are available for PC with ingame mod manager, but not all of them have also been ported to console(s).

Btw, does this mean all the charachters will be main charachters? And so I have to see all cutscenes multiple times?

I would rather they act as hirelings in this regard.

No they're like hirelings in that respect. If Tav goest to talk to them, they get the standard hireling lines. (What's up for discussion/Let's move out/..)
In camp they stand around Withers, like normal hirelings.
But a hireling can start a conversation with an NPC and then they 'll have their class and race options.
And they also get some wilderness banter from time to time.
But this is with the full nexus version. I don't know what exactly was cut for the ingame MM. It has to do with the script extender not being used.
