Having just wrapped up a playthrough as a dual wielding fighter using two longswords, it dawned on me that I have never seen any Very Rare (=purple) or Legendary longswords in any playthrough. To the very end I was stuck using by comparison fairly mediocre swords (Sword of the Emperor and Blackguard's Sword) while every companion had Legendary or Very Rare weapons - even the parked companions never joining the party were carrying one or more... I went and checked the Wiki and found that there is actually one Very Rare longsword - carried by Voss. So unless you betray and kill him for it, there is none. Now yes, I suppose I could abandon my preference and walk around swinging tridents, clubs or whatnot instead of swords - but frankly it is no fun dropping your character "flavour" for better stats.
So why is this? Does Larian not like swords? Is it considered too mainstream, the fancier magic weapons need to be something more exotic? Like a trident...?
Edit: Out of curiousity I made a search in the wiki, and longswords are not the only category that sees a lack of options at endgame. There's a distinct lack of balance when it comes to the amount and quality of gear of various categories. For example there is not a single purple battleaxe, while over a half dozen quarterstaves...
It is not gamebreaking by any means, but it damages the viability of rp builds centered around categories that don't have any decent alternatives at endgame. You either gimp yourself for flavour or go with a less fun but more viable alternative.
