I now always choose the option to sneak up the cliff and break down the walls myself rather than looking for something to throw Wulbren to break the wall, since it seems less dangerous. However...
If you break the Tieflings' wall, they run for it and get away, no problem, which is the idea because they are squishy if the guards attack. However, the gnomes just refuse to escape; they instead start fighting the guards by throwing things at them and inevitably they all die before I can do anything to help. Therefore, it's necessary to break the gnomes' wall first and then break the tieflings' wall. I haven't noticed this on previous playthroughs so I don't know if it's caused by a patch and the gnomes' behaviour seems almost buggy. Can anyone comment? Does it just depend on the position of the guard marching up and down?

From my experience (which might be weird and special case) if you yourself break out one group via the back wall and have the boat ready, they will want to escape without waiting for the other group, so you have to break them out simultaneously (meaning inside a very narrow window). If you haven't readied the boat, they will try to escape via the cliff and get into trouble with the guards, same as if you just open the door. If you or Wulbren smash the back walls and an eye or the patrolling guard notice, they'll sound an alarm and you find yourself in a fight. It might also be that the guard standing below the cliff is close enough to notice the gnomes escaping through the wall, I am not entirely sure there. I am also not entirely sure if the eyes and guards recognise that a cell is empty. My attempts to free our friends while the guards are still alive have always been very chaotic.

I find it best to ready the boat before doing anything else. This ensures that their priority will always be to beeline it to the boat and get in.

As far as releasing them goes, my experience is as such:

- Releasing the Gnomes first... They just leave. Since they don't care about anyone else.
- Releasing the Tieflings first... They will hang around and want to help release the Gnomes.
- If you release both quickly/simultaneously (By using a character at the back wall of each cell with bombs/Eldritch Blast ready to break the walls) they will generally both just head directly to the boat.

Normally what usually happens is I have guards come around while waiting for the Tieflings to make it all the way to the boat. BUT if intercepted quickly enough, both the Tieflings and the Gnomes will be grouped up by the boat and won't actively engage with the guards. So it ends up being fine to just beat up the guards and then take the boat out.

I haven't really figured out a way to get them all to the boat and escape before the guards get there. It's probably possible with good timing of guard patrols (After having prepared the boat and broke the 2 groups out simultaneously). There's probably other things that can help, such as using Arcane Lock on both cells (So the guards can't open the cells and have to go around to the cliff in order to make it back there) and using Silence on the walls so breaking them doesn't make noise to alert the guards. However, I've not tried such things as of yet.
