Am I right in thinking a multiclasses character will miss out on feats?

Say a Sorceror/Cleric, 6/6, will only get 2 feats

Yes, normally only level multiples of 4 get you a new feat. Althoug some classes, like fighter can get some inbetween also.
But, there exists a mod that gives you a feat every 2 levels.

Or if you went for 8/4 you'd get 3 feats. But yes, feats are attached to levels of the class rather than total character levels; as are most other things based on level (e.g. hitpoints, spell slots*...)

* This gets complicated if you mix full, half, and/or non-caster classes
