Assassin has always been playable, especially with multiclassing combos.
But it suffers from their main features being dependent on triggering surprise which is:
1) Not very intuitive how to achieve it reliably
2) When you manage to trigger it, surprise is so powerful in of itself that you hardly need an assassin to win that encounter anyway (at least outside of solo mode)
3) The most difficult encounters and notorious honor mode killers are locked behind cut scenes or other mechanics where you can't trigger surprise
