Hey everyone,
I’ve spent 400 hours on this game and completed it four times. I also tried three more playthroughs: one stopped in Act 3 due to the progression bug before the patches, one in Act 2 because of the Minthara bug, and one in Act 1 when I tried an evil playthrough but couldn’t stick with it. I think that’s probably it for me with Baldur’s Gate 3 for now.
Before I move on, I wanted to share some final thoughts and feedback, plus a few ideas for future games. Here’s what’s been on my mind:
Narrative:
Personally, I prefer a more personal story rather than the usual big stakes jRPG plot (level 1 – save a cat, level 20 – kill a god). Not every game needs to go that big.
Please think about how you guide players through the main mission. If the pressure’s too much, they might skip resting or exploring because they worry that ignoring the main story will cause something bad to happen (e.g., the tadpole in BG3 or the relic in Cyberpunk that can kill you).
World Design:
In BG3 and Original Sin 2, the world is made up of large open-world levels. I’d rather see smaller, connected areas on a map. The current design feels a bit cramped, like everything important is too close together, and it limits exploration. It also makes it harder to make diverse environments that feel logical. A setup like Dragon Age: Origins or Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir, where you travel across an overworld with random encounters, would feel more like a real world. A mix of big and small areas could work well.
A more open world could also help with designing the final act. Act 3 in BG3 got a lot of criticism because you had to start exploring again. If the city had been introduced earlier, it might’ve been easier to keep the flow going.
Characters:
All the characters are great and well-written. I just want to give a special shoutout to the Dark Urge. I like the challenge when my character has some autonomy if it is well written.
Gameplay:
Dungeons & Dragons has amazing lore, but the mechanics are made for tabletop. For example, the spell slot mechanic works well in the tabletop because there are fewer battles compared to video games. Take the Original Sin 2 system and add more skill variety would probably work better for a video game (especially the rituals that can be used outside of battle for creative problem solving).
I’d also love to see more unique mechanics for each character, like in Clair Obscure, where each character has their own system.
Challenge:
The combat was a bit easier than in Original Sin 2 (most likely also because of the larger amount of tools we have now), but it still felt challenging enough, especially with the honour mode.
Music:
Overall, the music was awesome, especially Raphael’s final act.
Engine:
Not sure if it’s my PC (it was the same with OS2), but the UI sometimes doesn’t feel as responsive as I’d like. It could be a bit snappier to make the experience feel more direct.
Overall, you all deserve all the praise for BG3. It’s an incredible game, and I can’t wait to see what you do next.
So long
