Spoilers below.
Ok, so cheesing the Helldusk armor in Act 1 is doable, the problem is entering Act 1.5 AKA the mountain pass, finishes off several open quests, most notably the Tieflings die because you didn't deal with the goblins.
There's a difficult path you can do, though, involving Karlach that keeps the Grove quest open, YouTube videos walk you through it. Lo! You can have your cake and not be a shallow mass murderer, too!
So I was gonna do that, but, sigh, goofed up on my planning. Hours in, I had already dealt with the paladins, before even talking to Karlach. Anyway, you need to proceed through that subquest carefully to accomplish this larger goal, and hours later I had borked it. No going back, ah well.
So I polished off the last goblin leader, I had already convinced the druids to not kick the tieflings out. They should be safe to travel on to Baldur's Gate now.
So I did the needful and got the Helldusk armor, bonk bonk! to quote my least favorite Star Trek episode. Now, just one thing to confirm, as there was no party in camp, that the tieflings actually survived. I had ticked all the check boxes, but maybe it didn't "take" as far as the quest engine was concerned, maybe needing to talk to Zevlor in the grove, and then have the party in camp, none of which happened.
Well, their boxes were sitting all around in the staging area just inside the grove entrance, but no tiefs. I checked the quest log, sure enough, quest complete! The tieflings were saved and had left for Baldur's Gate!
Yay! Now I just have to hope that's not some tortured logic bug path through the quest engine.
Bonus, I got to skip the party in camp finally!
