Well, Astarion blowing hmself up is no major loss.
To avoid those pesky natural 1's I recommend Gloves of Theivery sold by your Local Friedly Zhentarian Shoppe or Cat's Grace cast by the Team Cleric.

I did manage to get a crit failure wearing the gloves of Thievery once. However, what occurs much more often is that I click the dice, they start rolling, and in the background everything explodes because one of the partymembers needed to shift position and walk on the mine that I was disarming.

I always ungroup now when approaching a mined area.

You can avoid a natural 1 only if you are a Rogue level 11+, when all your rolls are at least 10.

However if you have a Halfling with the specific boost spell Improve Attribute, for Dexterity its called Cats Grace, your chance for a natural 1 is 1:(20 ^ 4) = 1:160,000.

Non-Halflings only get to 1:(20^2) = 1:400, so for them its a 0.25% chance.

Ah, my second game is now at level 12. No accidentally exploding vampires for us.

It's only a 2 check but my friend somehow rolled a 1 laugh Sometimes the RNG gods are just not in our favor.

Don't worry, I'm sure things will improve c: or at the very least, they will be amusing!

You can make Laezel try to open it too. Despite her claim that there is no time, she will do it if you assume control and make her press the button. Still 1/400 chance of failure though.

Overall, yes! But if you've already failed your roll, you are now down to a 1 in 20 chance for Lae'zel. Good luck!

I think she'll appear banging on the door of the wrecked monastery if you don't rescue her.

In my second game she was killed by the githyanki patrol by the bridge. I don't know why, but maybe because the cutscene triggered when we got too close to the bridge, and then we ran away. There was no clue she was supposed to join the party. When we came back later, better prepared, it just so happened that one of the dead githyanki was a valid target for a scroll of revivification.

The character banging on the monastry door is Shadowheart. Which you can actually avoid to rescue. Or, if you roll poorly (natural 1) and I think you can retry with Lae'zel but she can roll poorly as well (another natural 1), you can altogether miss out on her.

You cannot actually avoid Lae'zel. I mean you could avoid to rescue her from the trap after the Nautiloid. I never tried out what happends if you do so.

You could also throw her out of the party after she joined and the combat that follows. I dont think there is any possibility to avoid having a party with her when she ambushes you though.
