So regarding the rats in Temple of Shaar

I figured out on a more recent playthrough they were a split up human, but I could never figure out what to do from that point on.

I found the crucible or whatever it is way down there, with the pentagram and purple candles. I lit the candles, nothing. I went and secured more purple candles, placed them on the points missing one, lit them, nothing. No change in rat dialog, either.

I had stopped the convo before agreeing to leave them alone.

I finally broke and looked up the solution. Murder all the rats. Then they recombine, or just the one remaining one transforms, whatever, then you kill that guy and poof, the last Justiciar is gone, and Yurgurrr is freed from Raphael.

Really, that's the only option?

You can't use the crucible to force them to re-combine somehow? And how is just one remaining rat sufficient to reconstitute the human? The many horcruxes this situation ain't!

I'm not saying the rat fight isn't interesting (shocking how many crits they got on me, and how many critical misses I got on them, this killing 3+ per round.) But I was hoping for a better way to recombine them forcibly. Uhhh, before murdering the guy anyway.

Anyway, finished, I TP'd back to the waypoint, and 5 more rats immediately attacked. What? How were they not sucked into the recombining person?

Yep. That's the only solution.

I mean, if you could undo the magic of an Devil then like half the plotlines in the game would be rendered moot...

The magic splits Lyrthindor's soul among the rats. Killing them releases that part of his soul and that can recoalesce into his human form.

At a guess I'd say not ALL the rats in the temple are parts of Lyrthindor. Some of the rats might just be regular rats (Whom have BG3 related telepathy to know when you've started a fight with their friend...)

Technically, you just can leave them be and take the bribe.

True, but I never rescued

Yogurt before from his contract,

and wanted to do it to see what happens.

Yogurt and Omelett, what a delicious game!

Taril explained how you can draw out the person: just attack the rats and keep attacking. Go to 'Yoghurt' ( love that) afterwards.
Astarion won't be happy though.

As I understand it the pentagram and candles...
..are nothing to do with turning into rats, they were used to summon Raphael. Raphael was playing everyone off against each other: Morfred the mason (you can meet him in the House of Hope) made a pact with Raphael to kill the dark justiciars and Raphael ordered Yurgir to go and do it, but Lyrthindor, the last of the Justiciars, used the ritual pentagram to summon a devil to save himself - and it was Raphael again who appeared, gave him the secret of turning into rats (the Swarm Form feat from 3rd ed D&D in fact) thus trapping Yurgir in the Gauntlet of Shar by making it impossible to carry out the order.
