Armies would have platoons of just lowbie spellcasters trained for one thing only: counterspell, making spellcasters pointless in battle.
I realized this when I installed the unlimited party size mod and took everyone along just for the fun of it, which is to say, exploring the stories of the characters I usually leave in camp. Would you like to cast countspell? Why not? Sand off a beach.
Whoa! Why feel bad your spellcasters burn up their slots casting counterspell when that completely neutralizes the opponent spells!
Poster: Looking for adventure? Join the military, and one six week training camp later, hang out in the rear with the gear and cast one thin spell any time some great wizard tries to fireball your buddies.
