In essence, the "good" way to recruit Minthara is to knock her out at the Goblin Camp while she is temporarily hostile, and then make sure you don't long rest until you complete the related quest, not later.

Is how the non-lethal works mechanically, not only for Minthara but throughout the whole game. If the NPC isn't temporary hostile, the game considers them dead if you knock them out.

This reminds me of I think it was Deus Ex, which I did quite a bit of (unreleased) modding for. Any NPC who was killed had a <NPC Name>_Dead flag set in the game, to stop them reappearing in a later mission. But you could also knock people out non-lethally, so they added <NPC Name>_Unconscious. As well as _Dead. The _Dead flag was universal - if a character had it set, they would not come back... except for the few they'd specifically programmed in a check for the _Unconscious flag.
So I wonder, did DOS support knocking people out non-lethally? I wonder if a similar thing is happening here.
