I start the BG3 link the way I've been doing off and on for over a year now. Steam starts and asks me "Who's playing?" and demands I select a name, of which there is only one.

It's none of their damned business who's playing. I paid for this game, it's been on this computer for all this time, that's that. They know who I am already. What kind of tracking crap is this?

I managed to dodge Larian attempts to force me to create an account, now this?

No, not the UK. I just clicked it.

It not just the UK. The EU is working on similar legislature with an accompanying app and some members are already introducing measures; some US states too. I think most call it the Age Check which is supposed to prevent minors from accessing adult sites, but in the end you will end up with an internet that knows exactly who you are and leave a huge data trail.
