They just had luck that most BG3 players were only interested in waifus and bear sex and did not care about a consistent story, otherwise BG3 would have tanked.
To be fair, the game is mechanically solid (Not amazing, but decent).
With most of Act 1 and Act 2 being relatively coherent story. There are a few outliers, like inconsistency with the Nautiloid and acquisition of characters. But otherwise it's not THAT bad storywise (Other than the disconnect between utilizing tadpole powers and being told you "Feel part of yourself slipping away" and the actual lack of any consequences from using them)
It's really just Act 3 where the writing goes to pot. With the Emperor and Orpheus being written so horrendously. As well as some companion stories being pretty awful in their Act 3 conclusion...
