In Divine Divinity, players could freely choose their character’s name, class (Warrior, Mage, Survivor), gender, skills, and portrait. It was entirely customizable™.
Yet the official lore now retroactively claims Lucian as the canonical Divine — the hero whose deeds you performed.
This canonization feels unnecessary and undermines player freedom and agency.
It retroactively overwrites the personal story many players created and takes away the sense of ownership over the original adventure.
There were far better alternatives:
Keep the hero unnamed in the lore — simply refer to them as “the Hero” or “the Divine One.”
Use a title-only approach while maintaining full in-game customization.
