There are many differences between BG3 and Tabletop just due to technical/UI limitations, but some of them are purposefully stupid. Such as turn-based mode refusing to activate when you press the button (or shift-click).

Tabletop:
You: As the goblin walks past the ledge, I push him into the chasm
DM: OK, roll an athletics check

BG3:
You: As the goblin walks past the ledge, I push him into the chasm
Game: Sorry, I can't target the goblin, it's moving. You'll need to enter turn-based mode
You: OK, enter turn-based mode
Game: No
You: Enter turn-based mode enter turn-based mode enter turn-based mode enter turn-based mode enter turn-based mode
Game: OK, 15 seconds later after the goblin is long-gone, you enter turn-based mode. Now what do you do?
You: Stand there like an idiot apparently. Thanks for nothing.

Anyone know any trick for getting it to actually enter turn-based mode when you tell it to?
