Bit of a spoiler. In the beginning of the first act, there's the crypt with Withers. Outside, there's a weight you can shoot to kill two guys standing there.

If you go into that room below it, where stuff falls through, and you walk over to one of the cabinets, I seem to take mysterious falling damage when I click it to open it for looting.

Is this supposed to represent some rando object hitting me from above, to suggest things might wanna fall through, or is it a bug? It doesn't happen all the time. The text, "You have taken falling damage", seems confused if that's the case. Something falling on me, maybe!

It's a bug.

The whole room is a little buggy.

For example, as you can enter it by going into the hole from the surface, you can take fall damage if you jump into the hole rather than path to climb down.

Also, after going down the hole, there's a chance that one of your party members (Usually Lae'zel for me) is stuck in the air and cannot move, they have to manually jump down from floating in the air before they can then traverse the room normally. (Which is slightly to the side towards one of the cabinets. I'd posit this is most likely the cause for your mysterious fall damage if your character is considered falling from touching this random invisible floor)

I've also had a couple of times where going down the hole randomly has my character downed as if they were killed by fall damage, even though going down the hole is supposed to be safe. (This is seemingly tied to being in combat if for example you talk the people outside away, then talk your way in the front door, then go back outside and drop the stone and go down the hole - The people outside the room will run in to investigate the sound and start combat with you)

As a side note: Items falling on a character do Crushing damage not Falling Damage. You can see this when you throw larger items (Such as the Returning Pike) and enemies take a small amount of Crushing damage in addition to the thrown damage, or when you encounter the bug with returning weapons where they can crush your character because the game's physics are written with spaghetti code.

EverQuest had a falling damage mechanic that was tied to how long you fell. In normal circumstances, the distance you fell (and hence the speed) was proportional to how long you fell, so the math worked out.

But sometimes the game would hiccup, and you'd be "falling" from a very short height, for a long time. Whenever this happened, I learned to sigh and wait for my fate.

I wondered if this game had the same mechanism, but as that was the only place I'd ever seen such a thing, I didn't think so.

We'll leave for another discussion how in a number of places you just auto-path off a roof and take falling damage.

Technically, the suspended falling death thing is an actually intended mechanic that many games put in to prevent softlocks.

I.e. If your character gets stuck (For whatever reason) and cannot land on the ground, there will be a built in insta-kill that kicks in after a period of time to allow you to die and thus reset your position.

Meaning the bug is getting stuck in the air, rather than the "Fall damage" from a small height which is intended to help you not get permanently stuck.

Fun Fact: In Elden Ring, this feature also exists for enemies too. There is in fact a cheese for one particular boss (The dragon Greyll) where you get him to jump onto a tree and get stuck in a falling animation, then this mechanic kicks in and insta-kills him.

I have absolutely no idea why they added this mechanic to enemies. Given that they have the ability to reset boss to their initial position (Which is used both when the boss runs too far away from their starting position as well as when you rest at a Site of Grace) which would be the more logical course of action when stuck... But whatever I guess lmao.
