For the longest time I thought they had the head of a spear and the shaft/handle icons reversed, and this was the handle. On closer inspection, it's a proper spear with...an eyeball impaled on it?

Where did that eyeball come from? Not the momma. It came out of her body, though, so an embryo that hadn't been encapsulated in an egg, yet? Or was the momma actually the daddy, and it's, ummm...

Now I'm wondering. I never really went down the animal handling/medical analysis, I assume you may pull the thorn from the lion's paw somehow.

I'd hazard a guess that it's a manifestation of the magic in the spear rather than an actual organ of something.

Given that when you complete the spear the eyeball disappears and its description becomes "The tip of this spear, covered with horrifying barbs, strikes unerringly towards its target's eyes." which goes together with its innate magical effect of being able to proc blindness and deal extra damage to "Certain creatures that sport multiple sets of eyes".

Meaning that its magic is very much about stabbins the eyeballs. So when broken, it manifests this power instead into conjuring up an eyeball to stab.
