Yes it is an excuse.
Companions mindless walking into their own clouds of daggers is objectively dumb AI. It is objectively not supposed to be happening.
What you're suggesting is called a
workaround. Ungroup-regroup, redudant clicks, waste of time, just to prevent this idioticity from happening.
Thousands of players doing thousands of clicks throughout the course of their games because developers couldn't find 20 minutes to tweak the AI and put an end to this nonsense.
