-when you meet him, do not have a bloodstone on the character that speaks to him. Promise to look for the bloodstone and imp, and take off to Maradino's lair.

in Maradino's lair, don't talk to the imp; clean the lair out, get the bloodstone, find the recipe for imp courage, and go back to frederick.

talk to frederick about the imp, tell him NOT to attack it (pass the charisma battle).

give frederick the bloodstone to heal up with, then finish the ensuing combat.

go back to maradino's lair, and talk to the imp. Tell him to stay and hide. Then, give him the courage potion you made.

that maximizes the experience and trait gains for this little duo.

the only issue being whether you want vindictive or forgiving.

this gives you forgiving, refusing to give the bloodstone gives vindictive.

forgiving = immune to being cursed
vindictive = +20% to hit on attacks of opportunity.

I think the xp are the same since you will end up using the bloodstone yourself anyway.

Sorry to necro this, but since it was one of the first results when I was looking for info about Maradino's lair and Frederick, I figured it was worth commenting to let people know doing things in the above order bugs the quest.

In my Enhanced Edition game, battling Frederick before talking to Yox the imp resulted in the quest remaining unresolved in the log with no way to complete it. It seems like you need to make sure you talk to Yox BEFORE you go to heal Frederick if unresolved quests make your eye twitch.

I think you get all the XP regardless, though.
