But despite this encouragement for players to immerse in tailed and horned characters, it didn't really seem to have worked. Elves and half-elves and humans remained the preferred races;

So yea, I guess the majority prefers to play a hero that looks somewhat human. I know I do. Actually I think I played mostly drow and half-drow. But I also played a Duergar and a halfling. But never a dragonborn , gnome or a tiefling.

I think it has a lot to do with esthetiques and fashion. There is a reason why many players spend (me included) hours in Character creation. They want themselves and the team to look good.

I introduced my 60 year old wife to her first ever computer game (not even tetris or solitaire before). She got hooked, and have spent ages in character creation and finding nice looking armors in stores. She also have very strict preferences, dragonborns look weird and unnatural, so do Giths, but Laezel have a great personality. the skin color of Drows is ugly and small races do not look pretty in armor and do not look good in dialogs. She usually prefers humanlike races (humans, elves and mixes) but also loves tieflings, since they look good in her prefered armor sets. Clipping is not an issue for her, I have never heard her comment upon that. But she cringed when we played co-op and I was a dragonborn, "you look so weird in dialogs". That said, I do not think it is coincident that hairmods are very popular.

Then we have the min/maxer who makes choices due to stats.

I am not sure who big the remaining group is, those who want to explore a true diverse mix of races and looks.
