My last two runs of BG3 were simply to get as much of a happy life as possible for as many people as possible, simply because in my head I had identified with a lot of the companions and was as you say, emotionally engaged with the characters.

So, yeah, here's to hoping we have a solid challenging game that we can complete with a sense of joy for the personalities with whom we spend hundreds or thousands of hours in the game.

Having both is not a contradictory, they don't need to give in to anything. In many RPGs you can already be incredibly evil, expanding on that won't take away anything from anywhere else, it is simply a choice you never have to pick. It would be different if these games would have little or no choices.
