Why do the users need to give their phone number to verify the identity?

Firstly, it's a little disappointing from a privacy point of view. I have no idea who's going to have access to that information, nor how it might be used. Privacy in the US isn't much of a concern most of the time.

Secondly, it doesn't allow to verify the identity, as it claims to do, so I'm not sure what the point is. The only possibility it offers is preventing people from using two different accounts, I suppose, although I'm not sure it actually does (I don't have two accounts nor the motivation to try).

Has this requirement been enabled by mistake, and would it be possible to remove it?

The request for a phone number is the current level of verification we have in the Larian Discord Server and is an extra layer of protection against spam. Larian does not get access to your phone number through this layer of verification, and you can check Discord's Privacy Policy over here: https://discord.com/privacy

Their privacy policy are not very reassuring; they can use that information for a lot of different purposes, some of them involving 3rd parties (advertising, and so on).

I'm sorry, but there are other ways to deal with spam, like honeypots—I assume you mean bot spam, since regular users can simply be banned. It's the only server in my list that requires a phone number.

I've left the server, since I don't like the idea of giving away private information. I was expecting more from a European company.
