well u can first try upgrading your first offensive spell(fireball or something). then later on u can move on to cold-based attacks & don't forget physical damage attacks like deadly discs & hell spikes which helps if your enemies are immune to elemental damage.

for defense, magical armour for both physical & magical attacks are great.

best bet is for u to shop around (talk with NPCs) & buy spell books so u can upgrade or obtain new spells without waiting for level-ups. in DD, money's always in abundance so don't be afraid to buy. & never wait till later to buy stuff as items are always recycled so u may not get the same item again.
