I know I definately got my mysterious 1,000gp from Hugh. There is every chance it is stashed in the Abbey. I have a feeling that almost every pre-generated item in the game exists somewhere (usually a hidden land) from the moment you press New Game. If his gold is one of these pre-generated items, they may have left in in the Abbey somewhere and people have picked it up while looting.

Can someone please confirm: Is the 1,000gp not in your inventory when you reach the Engineer, but it appears immediately after you talk to him?

Firstly, my “huh” was in response to the 10,000gp as I am absolutely sure it is only 1000 gp.

Secondly, my dear, I assure you that I played the game 38 times and do not be shocked to know that I am playing it for the 39th time now.

The phantom 1000gp shall appear in your inventory when you have solved both quests related to Dr. Elrath but never before you speak to Hugh because reporting it to him concludes the quests.
After telling Hugh that information the dialog ends by a monolog from his side and you have to close the dialog box. if you immediately checked your inventory you shall find in your last tab a pile of gold indicated as follows: Pile of Gold (1000)
It cannot be added to any trade gold and you cannot spend it.

That's right, Hugh does give you the counterfeit gold. LUCRETIA says she hasn't spoken to Hugh yet, but has the 1,000gp. So what is the explination for this other pile of gold?

how and why

In the file "objects.000" the Object # 787 is enlisted within all other objects that hold the name "Pile of gold".
It is quite possible with a chance of one in a zillion that it was randomly generated as an item that she simply found in the abbey.
The fascinating coincidence of paying 1000 trade gold pieces and finding 1000 phantom gold pieces is almost unbelievable but not impossible.
Since Slasher is also an object in the same file but which never shows up randomly anywhere else in the game, there must be a list of object exclusion from the random generation list which does not include this phantom pile of gold object.
The coincidence is certainly incredible but not impossible.

Well I have not played the last days because we had this festival in Greece with some German groups and I was away all the time. I will inform you if I talk to Hugh (ARE YOU HAPPY NOW DAD?)what will happen.

Yes, I am playing now as a male survivor and then a probably-last-game with a male mage because I have some tests to do with both to watch their specific animations. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

You see, I have personal delight in watching different character animations following different class-plots and quest-sequences. Taking the combinations possible would tell you that 39 times is not a big deal concerning variety or variation but indeed it is a big deal for those who are not retired or get bored by repeating a task for so many times. When I worked in laboratory, control experiments and variations in chemical concentration and methods of reaction activation should explain to you why it is an easy task and not boring at all to play divinity for a hundred times more. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
