The only problem with matching to real time is that it can make stories harder. And what does Winter look like in the hellish underground?
I like what Dungeon Keeper 2 did with the real world. It watched the clock and had special messages that it played at certain times. Midnight was always "It is the witching hour. Curses are half price." Every hour after that suggested it was time to go to bed. Black & White looked through your address book and use the names of people in it. It also logged on to weather servers and tried to match the weather where you were. But none fo these things affected the game and it wasn't hard to see the effort they put in.
If Divine Divinity copied the seasons or the time of day, you would probably only see a small portion of what it could do. If you only play at night, it's always annoyingly dark. If you finished the game in three months, you'd only see one season. And what about animals which are seasonal? And if you have a mission you need to complete under the cover of darkness, are you going to sit around for hours until the sun goes down?
They're all very cute and very good ideas, but I feel they're inappropriate for this style of game. Perhaps if they release a MMORPG version for Divine Divinity 2, this could be better, as those games tend to run for a very long time?
