I think DAD is right. Just because you are soulforged w/the DK, it doesn't mean that you have to be joined at the hip. You should be able to tell the DK to hang out and do something else while your main char.deals w/NPC's that might attack the DK, and likewise the DK can tell the main char. to hang back while it talks or deals w/NPC's that would attack your main char....
