he's basically a completely different person. since you didn't summon him directly...you don't get the xp for him killing monsters. word of advice though...level up as much as possible before going into the room at the NW corner of the map. There is a steel guardian in there that is pretty tough to beat for low level characters. He killed my bodyguard in something like 3 or 4 hits. I never put points into summoning so I can't help you with that part of the question.
