In the beginning, when it comes to combat, it's best to use hit and run tactics where you shoot some arrows, run further when an enemy comes close to you, and then shoot them again. Have plenty of healing potions with you. I remember that as a survivor, I used the skill splitting arrows to deal with all those monsters in the catacombs during the early levels and also with the orcs. Unlike meteorstrike, splitting arrows has a lower casting cost and in the long run can't be resisted by any monster. Plus, it even does more damage.
