RPC hit my college and after about 15 - 20 minutes of after i moved in and hooked up to the ether net, things came crashing down. What i mean was they pulled the plug on all residents connection. It appears that the virus has affected the majority of the residents and they claim to say it is slowing down connection. So i lost connection for a total of 3 days <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> no internet <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" /> !!!!

The IT people came around during the course of the 3 days of our realm of darkness running stingers and mcafee virus removal tools. Collecting data and IPs. Very organized people around here. Thats a lot of rooms to visit. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />

So I now have a free 7.0 version of 2years mcafee virus enterprise.

Level of my paranoia 2 virus softwares and 3 firewalls with an IT team 4 numbers on the phone i have to dial, away.

Windows Millennium (Windows Me)
Note Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), and Windows 95 also are not affected by this issue. However, these products are no longer supported. Users of these products are strongly encouraged to upgrade to later versions.

But of course ! Upgrading to newer versions of Windows to get this heavy leak ? Thanks for your logical and reasonable counsel, Microsoft.

That means that E-Mail from GMX might be classified as Spam, which is not so good, because I use it, too ... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

Hello, everyone !

The site containing the Interview with Lar at AllRPG might install a Dialler on you PC ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/exclamation.gif" alt="" />

As you can read in this thread, about 75 % of all pop-ups or banners want to install a dialler or a virus !

Considering this, I suggest a ban of this site ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" />

Like many other sites AllRPG are using an external company who supplies the popups. It's not AllRPG who is running the ads, but the ad supplier.
We had the same issues a couple of weeks ago when the rate of suspicious ads increased dramatically. We stopped having any pop-unders, as a result Rendelius, who owns RPGDot has $40 less income from the site than before. As he had to keep on pumping money into RPGDot before that also, he now has $40 more every month to put in. $40 is only a fraction of the total monthly costs.

Running a site with a large visitor count costs money. Ad revenues have dropped to a point that one can ask the question if this is ever going to be profitable. Banning AllRPG will hurt AllRPG much more than the ad provider, not every site is in the position that they can cough up the money every month themselves. As AllRPG is partly responsible, the decent thing to do would be to put your complaints to them.
Afterall it's the complaints we got from visitors that made us stop the popunders also.

Alrik and Anthea are just warning us.
Nothing wrong with that!

When I was on that site my antivirus told me something was trying to write to my puter. So I blocked it and left.
As simple as that.

That doesn't mean that it's ok.
A site like that is designed to attrack gamers. Often a lot of young ppl. As AllRPG is partly responsable they should be more careful of who they do business with.
After this a lot of ppl won't trust AllRPG again.
Stuff like that does more harm to your site than what you gain from it in a short time. You said yourself ppl complained.
I never had it happen on RPGDot. But if it would happen there I would say bye bye and go looking for other gamesites.

you didn't???? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />

But surely you notice when you sign in from any neutral puter.

And you had questions about how they make money. no?

No we didn't. In our case the intrusive ads were only been presented at a low interval. Also some on the team have the no-ads option enabled so they don't get them anyway. We also only showed the ads every 12 hour, after which they were not shown again. So these two combined resulted in a fair chance not getting them.
Only after we got complaints we investigated things better and did some tracking of which the result was that we stopped using the service.

I know the situation is not entirely comparable to AllRPG, but walking away is a too easy option. Sending them an e-mail is not that much trouble is it?

I don't have any questions about how they make money. Ads pay very badly, We have some 30 million hits a month and some 500000 unique visitor sessions in that month and even those numbers are not able to cover the expenses of one server given the ad income. So I doubt AllRPG is able to make ends meet.

That probably explains why I never got one.

And I also don't wanna tell AllRPG how to make ends meet.
I'm just saying this will make it harder for them to make ends meet in the long run.
Becouse it will stop ppl visiting their site.

Aparently it's more frequent (constant?) there. As we all noticed it.

And again. Alrik and Anthea are warning ppl here on the forum. (I wish more ppl dit it about whatever site they experience such things). It's not about walking away. I'm sure ppl already asked staff at AllRPG what's going on. Becouse it's the best way to chase all your visitors and members away.

I have this thing about internet security. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I also know it isn't cheap to keep a site like that up. I understand perfectly where you're comming from. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
But as you saw here, it's not the way to go about it. Ppl will react, and it causes more harm than the little you gain.
It's just hard to believe they have no clue. Not if it happened so often.

Attention everyone, there is a new worm on the lose!!

Dear Sir or Madam,

You might currently experience a delay when sending (and thus as well receiving) Email via the Belgacom mailservers. This is due to the wormvirus W32.Swen.A@mm. If this virus succeeds in infecting your pc, it sends continuously Emails to all your correspondents via the Belgacom mail servers. Since it appears a certain amount of computers has already been infected, our mail servers are heavily charged.
To protect your pc, you will find below all details of this virus. If your pc is already infected, you will find a way to remove it.

How can you recognize this wormvirus ?

W32.Swen.A@mm is a wormvirus that spreads via Email, IRC (the chat application), file-sharing applications like Kazaa, internal networks and newsgroups.

When spreading via Email, it is difficult to recognize since as well the sender as the subject and body (message) are variable. The attachment always carries the extension .exe or .zip.
In many cases however, the wormvirus is disguised as an invitation of Microsoft to update your operating system Screenshot

What does this virus do ?

W32.Swen.A@mm does the following :

Deactivates different applications like antivirus software, firewall software, etc. As a consequence, other virusses and hackers have free access to your pc.
Looks through your harddisk for Email addresses and sends itself automatically to all addresses it can find.

got this via mail from my provider. Luckyly my anti-virus kicked in a few hours earlier when i actually got a mail like the one in the screenshot.

Hello, everyone.

Today I opened my "New E-Mail" folder (I'm using Pegasus Mail), and noticed Spam.

This time, it's ridiculous and irritating at the same time.

At L-Space, the site dedicated for Terry Pratchett (Discworld), there is the "Annotated Pratchett File", APF in short. Editor is Leo Breebart, to whom I have a high respect for the works he does with this.

Well, the Spam I received not only uses his Name, but also parts of my own Adress :

That behaviour is increasingly common with viruses... they cobble together a fake address, and sometimes pick up bits of old messages and plunk them into the "new" message. Hope you have anti-virus protection on your system... if not, Housecall (from Trend Micro) will do a live, on-line scan.
