out of the 3 virus protection programs which is best overall?

1. Avast (6 month but free renewable time use)

2. Antivir Personal Edtion (free unlimited time use)

3. AVG Free Edition (free unlimited time use)

if you had to choose between 2 & 3 what would you choose?

I would rather choose the Anti Virus program by German GData. They always get quite good results, although the program itself seems to be a bit slow (read in tests).

AntiVir (also a German Product) had good results in the past, too. [Edit : I see it in the list above).

Personally I'm a long time user of F-Prot for DOS. It's quite good as well.

Lately, I have seen a comparison chart, which AV program is better. The winner was Kaspersky Laboratory (russian scientists). The name is Kaspersky antivirus program, Why? The answer:

----------------
...Antivirus database 8 times a day

Kaspersky Labs provides antivirus database updates eight times a day. During outbreaks, urgent updates for deflecting new threats are available within 1-2 hours after the malware is detected.

Spam signature updates every 2 hours

Spammers never sleep and neither does our Linguistic Lab. We offer updates of spam signatures every 2 hours. The linguistic kernel supporting our anti-spam product line is updated regularly to counter new spammer techniques.....
----------------

You can get more info here hit me.

I combine it with Ad-Aware. The results are always the same. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I have clean and working machine. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />

Yeah but its not free though...so....I was looking for something that was free...yes im cheap lol

It just so happens that i think i found out whats been causing my computer to crash at startup multiple times these past 2.5 years

i have too many programs starting up when i load windows
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ROFL.gif" alt="" /> so......i've been trying to find out whats the best free firewall/anit-virus software available because i have too many running <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ROFL.gif" alt="" />

although this may not be the case but its worth a go.

so if you could choose from the list please of the firewalls mentioned and pick one for me and the anti-virus software mentioned above as well

@Jurak: hey buddy I still have AVG...it detected that worm.nachi for me <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ROFL.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />

... but couldn't remove it? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" />

Since much virus exposure is through email, one thing to remember with AVG Free Edition is that (quoting their site FAQ) "AVG Free Edition currently supports Microsoft Outlook email client." Note, that is "Outlook" NOT Outlook Express. I don't use Outlook (nor OE much, for that matter!) but nonetheless the AVG System Status panel for the free edition proudly announces: "Email scanner Active and Functional". Codswallop!

The pay version (again, according to site FAQ) supports "MS Outlook (97/98/2000/XP), The BAT! 1.6+ and Eudora (32bit) by plug-ins".

While this ain't the end of the world... reasonable caution, and separate scanning of email attachments, will still provide protection... it is something to keep in mind.

I use Pegasus Mail. Never had any problem.
