First time playing the game and haven't gone too far. I am in level two of the catacombs below Aleroth.

I am playing a Mage character. However, I am finding the going a bit tough and am starting to long for a Warrior-type that can sustain some damage without dying after three hits (some of those undead swarms in the catacombs are brutal)!

So, my question:

Is it possible to take my mage character and make him a decent fighter by leveling up his STRENGTH and AGILITY along with some Warrior class skills? Or would it be better to just start over with a true Warrior?

Don't get me wrong...I like the Mage spells and everything, just don't like dying every five minutes!

Thanks for your input...

you don't need a warrior, you just need more constitution. or begin again as a warrior, for in you can still udr mage spells as whatever you are. and vice versa.

Welcome scaryogre

I played as a female mage first time through, and managed to turn her into one hell of a fighter...

p.s. - a good supply of potions helps a lot at the start!

One night i was lying away thinkin of how i could finish this one quest, and i thought of a great spell to use.
Anyway...the long and the short, yes, you can do well with a mage. Early starting tips - non spoiler

LewsTherinKinslayer13 is right I've got a mage that is stupid as hell? Just pick your char that looks best(female warrior nudge nudge). Theire is a max stat diffirence of 10 point so it can be leveled in 5 levels for sure.

OK, cool. I didn't want to start over anyways. hehe

So, I saw the tip on adding constitution points. What else would you guys recommend to increase my somewhat feeble mage so that he can fight (and survive) better? What warrior skills would be worth choosing? I am Level 5 I believe and have 4 skill points to spend.

Also, if I do this (mage-warrior) class hybrid thing; By using up points on the warrior skills path am I sacrificing my abilities as a mage later on?

Finally, is Identify worthwhile to spend skill points on in the early game?

Man, I cannot tell you how much I love this game. By far my favorite since Ultima VII: The Black Gate came out so many years ago!

for a mage i would definitely put a few points into meteorstrike, comes in very handy while you are still weak.

No, you would not sacrifice naything,. all skills are interchangable between the classes...
I would get sword expertise...there are some good swords further on in the game...
Also, for a mage - max out meterstrike, it helps you far into the game, and has a low recovery time.

Nope as long as you have skill points you can use all the skills you like.

Exept the divine skills they become unlocked at a certain time in the game.

Agreed about meteorstrike... It was my main spell until well into the game.

Question about the catacombs:

How long should Gregar Brock last? After he "joined" me he killed three orcs that were standing around in the hallway. Now he is about at half vitality and I am only on level 2 of the catacombs! I'm worried he may die soon and leave me to the wormy undead all by myself.

yeAH. TRY NOT TO, ER, CAPS LOCK

yeah. try not to get him to fight the orcs, he'll get killed. he usually lasts me to level, 3 or 4. but I like to fight, to get the xp

with Gregor, you get no xp, so you don't move up levels, don't get stats tAT YOU CAN PUT IN...

CAPS LOCKS SUCKS

constitution, to boost yer health.

are you playing easy, hard, or normal???

Well, it does depend on how much he gets hit really. There is no way to say 'he will last such and such a time'
However, do not leave the catacombs while he is still with you...i will not tell you anything else, but just heed the warning.

Sounds like I am doing it as well as could be expected then. He only killed the orcs that were directly north of the room where I found him. They were in the hallway and weren't going anywhere so I suppose I had no choice but to let him fight since the orcs started pelting him with crossbows. He killed a couple of them right there in that area and that was it.

Does anyone know of a site (or in game utility perhaps?) that has details on the monsters? Looking for HPs, resistances, special abilities, etc...

thanks,

the skill know creatures, but for what you want, you need to be a higher level.

I saw a site for the wastelands, but nothing else, maybe Avorions inn? or the Lucos in? not sure which one. they might. sorry.

I think this may have been talked about it, and i know some stats were done - like Lews suggested, but it was too much work.
