I'm playing honor mode, real honor mode, for the second time. The first time I was a fighter. I didn't fail, I just got tired of it.
This time a sorcerer. I'm doing well so far, cleared out the topside of the crypt, did enough to get the quest from Mol, some other stuff, L3 and climbing.
So regarding the strange ox...
I go to buy the ring. From what I saw on YouTube, you park your party well away, send a mage hand to attack it, and it is insta-popped by the ox. You can then go to it, dance around a bit, then it will vendor you the ring.
So I do this, and I've done it half a dozen times before. The mage hand smacks the strange ox, and blam! What looks like a caustic bulb explosion happens, and also hits the other ox and a tiefling screwing around with a flower bed (not the one at the hay) but that is irrelevant because all the tieflings aggro.
I'm ready for failure from mistakes or unexpected stuff, but this is more like the unknown unknowns, since when does a mage hand slapping an ox

the mage hand critted, causing the slime monster inside to spill some guts? Never seriously attacked it before. It didn't un-ox.
