I was thinking of the original Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and the basic-epxpert DND ruleset. Here you were encouraged to hire henchmen, not so much for fighting, but as torch bearers or as carriers of loot. You had to find them first in a town and pay them of course. This concept could maybe be copied for all kinds of camp or "offline" tasks. For instance, you hire an alchemist, provide them with a wage and ingredients, and equipment, and they will craft things for you in camp while you're exploring and adventuring.

It was a nice side game to decorate camp with all kinds of lab equipment, but it would have been nice if that could have been used to brew better potions and/or with fewer ingredients, if you're using the lab in camp. No complaints about being able to just whip up the necessary potion in your backpack at full jog, though! Since I hadn't read anything ahead of starting the game, I also had like 53 ropes until I realised that I'm not going to need them. I think the balance of challenges in BG3 was pretty decent. I think I didn't pick-pocket until late in Act 3 and that was to fix a bug in the Anhur quest. What I missed was the option to scribe scrolls as would have been standard in AD&D, but I'm not sure if that's a BG3 or 5e thing.
