There is a kind of bug in this section.
The main page just shows the topics "active in the last month".
If you want to see the other topics of the section, you have to change the previous choice by clicking on "from all dates" and on the "change" button.

There are a lot of very good topics in this section but you can't see them on the main page.

I had the same thinking Tsel. It is not this "Oblivion" look we will find in so many new games.

So its look very refreshing new, i hope this impression will be stronger if we see more.

I think the "lighter" is just an illusion caused by the shaddows. Or better the lack of shaddows

But the expression "next-gen" scares me. Does it mean that the game is for the next-gen consoles only? Will there be a PC-version?
Posted By: AlrikFassbauer Re: Impressive Screenshots - 16/05/05 09:09 PM
Supposed that is a bridge we see in the left area in the last picture, then this could be the point near the brige left of point 8 on this page : Farmlands , meaning that the bridge in the background could be the Troll Bridge. With the building a kind of mill, I'd suppose.

But it could also be that this is no bridge, but just a high wall, which accidentally looks like some sort of brigdge (note the small orb-like things on top of this structure - they appear rather in the back as well - in an angle that would be unnatural to be a real bridge).

Besides, the sign on the opposite of "Verdistis" reads like "ZAN" to me.

On the last picture the char seems to perform some sort of spell ?

Alrik.

In which resolution are the screens? Right, 1024x768. No next gen console can handle it, because of TV limitations.

I think the arrows from left to right are:

aleroth
rivertown (I think)
and verdistis

and I think this image is near the church area if we asume the arrows folow a direct line of sight. (this could be wrond since ars magicana is not on the arrows seems a bit od if it's at the church then)

According to the newest Xbox 360 specs there won't be higher resolutions as on the "old" Xbox console. But there will be many more details possible right now, that's the main differences.

Edit:
Ok, according to heise.de there will be higher resolutions supported, but not with maximum details. Standard resolution will be 720 × 480.

The Gothic games did the whole world rather nicely.
I never had an issue with graphics bogging down my computer.

I wouldn't really worry about that.
I realize I might be in the minority, but the console & PC work
Bioware did on KoTOR, I thought was real good.
If Larian opens the doors to that world then good for them;
it will open a whole new world of possibilities for them as a company.

I love Kotor, and it was a great game, but for different reasons. It was a licensed property with a terrific presentation and thousands of wonderfully voice-acted lines. The fact that it was an authentic Star Wars experience also played a huge part in its success. If Kotor had just been a generic Tolkien RPG, it would not have been as good. The interface was terrible when compared to gamees like Neverwinter Nights, Temple of Elemental Evil, and Divine Divinity. Kotor still would have been a lot better if the interface had been designed for the keyboard and mouse, and not analog stick+buttons. The game definitely suffered from its porting from the X-Box (Although you could make the argument that the production values wouldn't have been as good, since the X-Box sales would be needed to fund the professional voice acting, etc).

Plus, Divinity is not Kotor, and I don't want another Kotor. I have yet to see a PC franchise that didn't get worse when it was moved to consoles. Deus Ex, Thief, Ghost Recon, etc. Keyboard and mouse are a huge asset to any RPG. Customization of hotkeys and pointing and clicking are essential. Any good RPG interface has to be built around that, unless they simply remove features from the game to make it shallow and simple.

My opinion, at least.
Posted By: Macbeth Re: Impressive Screenshots - 17/05/05 06:56 PM
Well it all looks amazing! These screens might not reach the level of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, but if the gameplay is as good as the original , the next RPG of the year is definitely heading our way.
Good job Larian!

i'm looking at close detail to the pics , and i selected two segments of it:
picture1, the left hand of the character

[Linked Image]

on this image you see that part of the fingers dissapear in the armor itselve.
also the wrist is a bit on the tiny side.
it probably has to do with the 3d engine i don't know, because i never saw a perfect 3d body in games anyway.

picture2: the shoulder blade

[Linked Image]

the shoulder pad seems to be "hanging" above the shoulder itself

And what are we seeing? is it our hero or is it some NPC in the game, because i remember correctly, DIV2 was in the first person perspective?

annyway, there still great pics, keep up the good work!

its a x2 zoom ub,
and you can see it in normal size
Q: does it matter?
A: Yes

but not for the normal gameplay.
i play games that are no more then text on the screen, or just a jibjab of pixels, and i liked them!
What i'm trying to point out that if you take great care to make a game with the best possible fysics engine today, a state of the art 3d engine and the impressive speedtree software, it's in the details.

i don't care mutch how the game looks in it's final state for my personal pleasure, i will buy it anyway, i'm a "friendsoflarian" like many other people here.

I'm yet to see a 3D engine that didn't have clipping problems at all. Half-Life 2 has a very good attempt to it but it's not 100% working.

The Doom 3 technology has almost no clipping problems at all, but no engine can reach the 100% working border.
But well, in RPGs this is one of the things i don't except. Story, non-linearity, character development are more important imho.
Posted By: doctor_kaz Re: Impressive Screenshots - 18/05/05 12:41 PM
The graphics probably won't look great if you zoom in really, really close, but if it's like the other Larian games, it probably won't be made to play zoomed in. It will probably be made more with a top-down tactical view in mind.
Posted By: Draghermosran Re: Impressive Screenshots - 18/05/05 12:54 PM
Raggdoll physics in HL2 are pretty flawless (2 dead bodies won't clip, but this is a setting needing to be turned on). Still the models do have clipping problems with themselves.

People today are never satisfied anymore.
How does that saying go... about a given horse and it's mouth.
And about that dog and always finding a stick.
The shots look great.
And that's what it's all about.
Besides, now this is turning into something that belongs in the RPG games section of the forum.
85 to 90 % of gamers prolly won't even notice most of the details. Couse they'll be to busy gaming.

u're right on the money, Seth. if i want details, it's not in photorealism or proportionality of things & such but more into the context & relationships (between characters, things, events).

let's just say i have reservation on too much graphical emphasis.

as for interfaces, yes i am not a fan of console interfaces but KOTOR works well. i find it easy to navigate & it is seamless to the whole outlook of the game while large enough to make it easy to see. since Larian is into pure 3D now, i hope they make the interface more effective by utilising 3D capabilities such as variable transparency, T&L etc.

i do hope that the PAUSE button stays in all Larian games as that is the most helpful feature in any situation.

Actually, on the Belgian gamesite Arena 51, these screens were posted. One of the sentences in the added commentary is:

Larian laat vandaag voor de eerste keer in hun kaarten kijken, op E3 zullen ze hun next gen engine demonstreren.

Translation: Larian is showing its cards for the first time today, during E3 they will demonstrate their next gen engine.

I don't know the validity of this source, but it's good news, right?

Ok let me say *drool*...*drool*....*double drool*... the scenery is beautiful...very colorful but not to bright(easy on the eye as i like to say) and not as depresing as the other games....

I agree it has a sort of fairytale theme to it....but i think Larian has really captured living in medievil times with those shots..and thus the true nature of a rgp.

I had a lot of fun playing Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity and i really don't agree when you say that these games are depressing.
I understand that some people did not like the dark universe of Beyond Divinity however this game has great graphics and great colours.

Yep and also in Beyond Divinity.

I think that the upcoming Larian game will be in a way different from Divine Divinity and from Beyond Divinity.
But i am confident in the Larian team it will be as great ( or more) than the two other games.

@ Barta
I think he was referring to RPG games in general... if you look at the colors in MOST of them, they are dark and gloomy.... he didnt say Larian's other games...

DD was not gloomy in any way.... BD was a little... but i think the sence here is that most RPG's tend to be dark...

A Mere misunderstanding...

I did not think BD was all that dark.
I have seen other games that are much darker.
BD was around the middle of the spectrum.

However, I think what was meant was that
BD was darker than DD and the lighter nostalgia
of DD was missed.

Barta: Yes i think i souldnt have put "the" in front of "other" in my post...but i can see the misunderstaning that i have caused.
I think too fast...so much so that when typing i add/forget to add some words which i should.

I was refering to rgp games other than Larian's...morrowind......for e.g

I think that in Larian captured the essence of rgp games and from the screenshot for 2 it looks like they are entering the next stage of improving that image. I mean its very similar to but has a slightly "lighter"...more welcoming feel to it...heck i think if i had a painting which is similar to that screenshot...i would have filled my house with those piantings....

Close up im sure objects and the such may look odd...perfection doesnt exist.....but if your looking so close then in the end you may need glassess....i should know my eyesight is terrible.

Becuase im greedy....it would be interesting to see if there were any more screenshots availible....

Yes, when you're creating and using models
you don't want to use HiRes ones / Completed ones
until most everything is done or else you'll be
sitting around forever waiting for things to render.

Rendering:

So does oblivion (and did morrowind). It seems to be a very flexible engine.
Posted By: Draghermosran Re: Impressive Screenshots - 26/05/05 05:41 PM
They'll test models ingame more than rendering them, the models skelleton, animations, need to be polished out, so clipping won't occur.

Gamebryo seemed popular on E3 titles.

Well these are alpha alpha screens. Without High Dynamic Range (HDR) lighting. if I am not mistaken the expation pack of HL2 would also have HDR.

[edit] halflife² HDR movie

also HDR lightning means type X800 or GeForce 6800 gpu

Damm my 6600gt (when it comes out prooly need a better gc)
Posted By: Draghermosran Re: Impressing Screenshots - 27/06/05 09:07 PM
yes, i've learned from Lar HDR will be in the new engine, but atm it's not applied. HDR will be applied at the end of the dovelopment process, of the engine.

Also what ive read about the transforming into a dragon and fighting in the air and stuff make my mouth fell open...

I personally do not expect that the whole world in the final game will be as "light" as the screens we got.

Hope there'll be nice weather effects and stuff too, like impressing thunderstorms and sunsets. I cant expect this from larian but it would make a game near perfect if its combined with the gameplay from DD and an even larger world.

yes the screens are of a real hot summer day. Maybe a little haze effect like in gta sa. But it realy looks good. And I am sure there will be other weather effects like wind fog and rain.(would be a shame to have speedtree trees without a little wind to move the branches). What also would be nice is that the seasons change depending on your progress not to fast that it seems to fast not to slow that you can cycle the seasons a couple of times during the game.

I think I speak for all of us when I say that some new screenshots of the next-gen game would be nice. There has to be some new material available... We're all very anxious.. we wanna see more !!

any ideas on a release date ??
Posted By: Morbo Re: Impressing Screenshots - 07/07/05 01:50 PM
I dought we will see something new soon. The screens we saw where alpha alpha alpha alpha screens.
The only thing they could release now would be concept art or an article like those "peek of the week" or "making of" articles. Remember that they also haven't officially announced the game yet and that the screenshots are next gen games.

If I would guess the release date: Q4 2006-Q2 2007 or maybe later if they are also porting it to next gen consoles.
Posted By: Viper Re: Impressing Screenshots - 08/07/05 07:05 AM
putting it on the website is kind of an official announcement imho.
The release dates you set there are quite long.. though... lemme think.. how long has it been since has been released... over a year now isn't it, so thay've been working on the next gen kind for a year by now (excluding time for patching ) they use an existing engine, saves them a year of work, so... som where Q2-3 2006 seems possible.. could be more the time you said though, depending on how things go offcourse.

edit... I reread the announcement, and I'm not so sure anymore if they wrote a new engine or use an existing one, so yu might be right morbo.. I only do hope that they make the engine revolutionary enough to compete with the gfx from in 2 years.
esp. the amount of polugons and quality of the textures should be kept high... what is unrunnable now, will be smoothly possible then.
Posted By: Morbo Re: Impressing Screenshots - 08/07/05 11:15 AM
They purchaced the engine Gamebryo. But they also had to write "neat" little addons to the engine. Well I also hope it's sooner but the last 10 % of the development tekes 90% of the time (testing, bugfixing, impovements...)
Posted By: Viper Re: Impressing Screenshots - 08/07/05 11:46 AM
true, but releasing screenshots on the community doesn't take a whole lot of time does it.. just another 2-3 nice peaks into the 3D world of
Posted By: Morbo Re: Impressing Screenshots - 08/07/05 12:28 PM
idd it has been a long time without some kind of new news about DD². Some screen shots or an article abut their progress would be nice.
Posted By: Draghermosran Re: Impressing Screenshots - 08/07/05 03:12 PM
They'll make the engine work almost perfectly first, then start building the world (and it will be vast) so maybe then we might get to see more screenshots, current screenshots are from a testlevel to test the engine, not from the game and will never be in the game.

In other words it's still to early to say or show stuff about/from DD2
Posted By: Morbo Re: Impressing Screenshots - 08/07/05 03:38 PM
ty for the elaboration

About the vast world. I will be happy if it is as vast as GTA:SA and as detailed as (beware of the morrowind flaw, vast world no enemies and stuff to do ).

PS: a sea and sailing boat would be nice. Although polymorfing dragon has solved the travel thingy

I mean if you have got the ideas and drawings of a potential game...how long will it take to make the graphics corrosponding to the drawings and impart all those ideas into the game?
Posted By: Morbo Re: Impressing Screenshots - 28/07/05 05:00 PM
Well according to my course in Software engineering.

Rational unified process: Is an cycle that when completed gives a new version(testing, alpha, bèta.. )

one cycle consists of 4 stages

the inception phase (research, financial, risk's, scope, (10-20% of the use case))
elaboration phase (mile wide inch deep design, researching and solving the technical risks, 80% of the use case diagram completed) this gives you an idea if the goals are feasible
construction fase (construction and integration of the project)
transition phase (phase where they see if they have reached theire goals and get feedback)

(I refer you to pm me or the internet for more information about these phases)

In a long and complicated project the time frame is as followed:

5-20% of the time in the inception phase
24-33% of the time in the elboration fase
60-40% of the time in the construction fase
8-7% of the time in the transition phase

Now since they have had a test level we can assume they completed this cycle 1 or 2 times. I think they are now in the 3rd cycle at elboration (HDR lighning) or construction.

So if we take in account that they still have 3-4 cycles to go it could take a while (altough the last cycles are the fastest). My guess is that they are at 60% (that would mean release Q3-Q4 2006).

that is if they are useing the RUP model, thay also could be using Prototyping (highly unlikely in such a big project) or extreme programming. Well there ar many models they could uses.

But I have always liked the phrase

It's done when it is done

Ok thanks Morbo.

The reason i ask...and i know people might think im mad but i have a few ideas for my own video game. When i mean ideas,i mean the main plot, story, quests, abilities, scenery, cinemtatics, statistics of heros/moneters and i plan to make drawings and my own music.(I have to learn how to draw..lol)

The problem..well the most glaring one is that i have no idea how to transfer all this onto the computer screen...to use lay-mans terms, but your explantion seems like the computer stuff is the most hardest work of the all.

I makes me appriciate all the good work that larian do.

Try writing a MOD first. Neverwinter nights or something like that. There's plenty of help on it, and you could make it however you like. I think thats the best place to start

Write a module. Like an expansion pack. There are tools within most games nowadays to create your own levels. Start out by creating your own levels, using someone else's engine (the toolset in neverwinter nights).

You can make multiple levels, link them together and create your own dialogue. This, to some degree, will let you create your own game. There are limitations doing this, however, if you do a good job, people can download your level and play, thus giving you feedback.

http://nwvault.ign.com/modules/tutorials/viewlets/

Its a good place to start

Yep thats what I would do thats why I've been suggesting a ² SDK
Posted By: tragic Re: Impressing Screenshots - 05/08/05 05:00 PM
xacesx..yep i see where your coming from ..it would help getting to know how to make the gaming world althougth there will be limitations becuase of the limited spells/abilities.

Thanks for the advice
Posted By: Draghermosran Re: Impressing Screenshots - 14/08/05 07:14 PM
SDK's for RPG's like DD2 are a good idea, tho it would be hard to start with, unlike an fps, 6 walls a gun and a monster... tadaaa level. Level design is much more complicated i believe.
Posted By: Morbo Re: Impressing Screenshots - 15/08/05 01:48 AM
No drought about it but it can give enthusiasts some experience. I don't believe that in Belgium there are a lot of experience game Developers. Most likely the sdk is to much for one person to handle. A programmer wiz can create the most complex thing but without a decent graphic designer the game is nowhere or a graphical pearl that has no story.

ps: Can some one from larian post the flowing sentence. "No new news, Work is progressing"

I have to agree... Everything in the background is just gorgeous, and the skeleton looks very frightening. And for the record: I really love his pose. I know it's just a screenshot of one frame, but he looks very animated, unlike those static enemies you see in Oblivion screenshots.

The only thing left is some shadows and it would be just perfect. Really, I mean it. It looks completely next-gen.

So yeah, congratulations to the graphic artists!

Yeah I know I'm already saving to upgrade my cpu (a X2 would be nice) and a new GPU that will be able to handle hdr lighting(next year(december) Upgrade part 2: and this time it's personal )

Btw is it may imagination or is this a screenshot with not all the details on high? Like I don't see shadows and I don't think hdr lighting is used. Could be my eyes are decieving me. I'm a little dissapointed with the XMas screenshot - while they made excellent use of SpeedTree, it's the ground texturing and those rocks that bother me. The ground texture doesn't seem to be taking use of the parallax mapping and neither does the rocks. Another thing is that the rocks on the ground have a very HIGH polycount as opposed to the large boulders - neither even seem to use bumpmapping or anything to give them a 3d look. I do not believe they are using any form of dynamic lighting either?

Anyway, it looks great but it doesn't seem like there was too much further work on the graphics engine they are using since they posted their first screenshots over 6 months ago, and that they are not using their current engine to it's full potential.

i would like to say 'yet' to your comments as i think Larian is still in the learning process & who knows, maybe they also factor in the wide range of computer performances so they have to balance performance against eye candy.

the way i see it, hardware T&L is just for looks only unless it's utilised in gameplay as how it's done in Deus Ex or Oddworld (light & shadow).
Posted By: AlrikFassbauer Re: Impressing Screenshots - 17/01/06 12:36 PM

Posted By: Draghermosran Re: Impressing Screenshots - 17/01/06 02:43 PM
Just look at the Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion screenshots, the engines are pretty much the same, each company might have tweaked them differently but they have the same possible features.

Amongst other things, the ground texturing system is still work in progress, this screenshot is not representative of the visual quality of the final game

AlrikFassbauer : parallax mapping is one of the techniques used to fake relief on a flat surface, just like bump mapping, but one step further.

2 or 3 more posts offtopic and I exaggerate? Like janggut said: there are other forums enough to chat around. It starts with 2-3 posts, but where does it end? I guess I do have some experience with browsing the forum, nah?

My suggestion would be to close this topic. It has been far more than enough said about it, imho.

Enough has been said indeed. When new screenshots are released (no not "if and when") a new thread will be created. We're done here.

[color:"orange"]I don't agree at all [/color]

1st Only a Larian guy/girl can decide to close the topic.
2nd The members are enough intelligent to understand that being offtopic kills a good topic.
3rd It's untrue to say "Enough has been said indeed" because new members could add posts in this topic and give their opinion about the old screenshots from the next Larian game.

NO

It's done when it is done.

no news is good news (means they are working hard)

I didn't ask for an early copy of the game, just a screenshot. Jeesh.

Also, I have no clue as to how often this has been asked, as this is the first time I've visited these forums in a pretty long time.

Larian should lock this thread until they have something to offer.

Actually I find the lack of screenshots a bit disturbing, afterall it's been a long time quiet around the next gen game, to quiet.

What if everything isn't so 'allright' and no news is actually because there is only bad news? Poeple and the media are forgetting about the "next-gen game".
Posted By: TheDivine Re: Impressive Screenshots - 08/04/06 01:37 PM
indeed, an announcement would make the game appear on gaming sites like gamespot. People will see it, will think hmm...that looks nice...
Its all so silent now around it...
Posted By: isorun Re: Impressive Screenshots - 08/04/06 04:03 PM
but the saying goes: no news, good news
Posted By: TheDivine Re: Impressive Screenshots - 08/04/06 05:37 PM
f* the saying
Posted By: Morbo Re: Impressive Screenshots - 08/04/06 06:15 PM
People there are other place to discuss this. This topic was first created to give comments on screenshots that have been posted and the grafical glitches in them Not whining that no new screenshots are being posted.

Because as you well know those are not in-game screenshots of the final product (no HDR lighting) but rather shots of release 0.2.4a. These are screenshots to silence hungry forum members.

So I suggest that some one creates the "We want more information about ²" in the chat section so we can stop the offtopic posts here. Because moping that there are no new screenshots won't make Lynn release them any time sooner in fact it will delay the release.

just My 2 cents
