Hi Everybody,

I'd like to tell you about a new RPG game that is coming out soon. It's called Kult: Heretic Kingdoms and it reminds me very much of Divine Divinity and Diablo.

But it has one really fantastic feature that those games sorely lack, and it's something that has got me really excited.

Kult: Heretic Kingdoms is going to be released with an Editor/Toolset (just like NeverWinter Nights and Dungeon Siege) that will not only let people modify the existing game, but design and create their own games.

You'll even be able to make your own game content, such as new textures and 3d models of characters, weapons and monsters for use in your own games, and to share with other players. In fact, if you want to, it sounds as though you'll be able to completely re-design the game in any way you please. So if you want to make a Sci-Fi game on an alien world, or a game set in the American Wild West, or something really unique that nobody has ever thought of before, it looks like you'll be able to.

But if you don't want to go to all the trouble of designing your own worlds, you can just use the existing game content to create endless new games set in Kult's universe (which seems pretty cool by the way).

This way, unlike Diablo and Divine Divinity, the game will never end, because when you finish the official game you'll be able to create your own 'expansion games' and continue the game forever.

Yes, there was a Kult discussion. However I didn't know about the editor, thanks for telling.
I won't lie: I am sceptic about a 3d program/drawing program weilded into a game editor. 3D Models aren't easy to make and more difficult is to create textures. I seriously doubt the devs are using the editor to create their own.

As for randomly-generated games, I hate to deceive anyone but I've seen some randomness and I didn't like it. Nothing beats hand-made levels or quests.
Ask Sacred players and they'll answer you.

I haven't seen Kult in action so I might be as well wrong, just remember to proceed with caution: if you are buying Kult, wait for a few reviews.

This makes it sound like Divine Divinity is somehow inferior to this title in the respect that it lacks this feature. I'm not sure it is a feature, however--at least, not to me. I mean, I can't just press a button to randomly generate any number of minor and major quests. (In fact, the KHK website makes a point in their features statement of boasting that they don't include any random quests.) So you have to actually build a new game in the quest editor; and it's been my experience that it's fun playing somebody else's, but not much fun playing your own.

Have you tried building quests in the NWN and Morrowind editors? What's your feeling about modules designed with those games? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Hi Kashiya and thnx for the info.

I will have to agree with fable though. When I tried to use Morrowind´s editor after a while I was not very interested in doing so. Creating my own game lacks the surprise element which IMHO is very important in a game. It is very interesting for me to explore worlds that the developers created, find items and NPCs. If the design of the game is mine, then I would know all this and it will be a bit boring. Of course this is only my opinion. Other than that the game seems interesting. The Morrowind editor is confusing.

Age of Empires was easy! But had a few scripting problems, that were hard to figure out.
Well, you can always exchange the modules. I joined the Kult forums and found out about the minimus system requirements:

I won't rely too much on this information, but Kult's graphics are equal if not supperiour to Beyond Divinity yet the minimum system requirements are lower. I might change my mind about Kult. Ah, I also read some more info on the editor:
It doesn't have a 3d program, you have to export your model from your own program, as well as the texture. Still I've become interested. Let's see how the project will turn out.

When it is going to be released?
Kult is due for release September 11th 2004. Sorry for the confusion before, I should have said that you'll need to create your own 3d game content in third party programs like Gmax and Milkshape, then import your creations into the Editor to use in your own games.

You are right to be skeptical, I am too. I'm just praying that it all isn't too good to be true. Because I got really excited about NeverWinter Nights and Dungeon Siege too, when they were due for release, only to be very dissappointed.

But I must say, although I didn't like those games very much, I had lots of fun playing with their Editor's, and, to be truthful, I think some of the modules made with the two Editor's were better than the actual games themselves.

In fact, it was playing with these Editor's that got me interested in game developement and 3d modeling, and that's something that I really do love.

Unfortunately I'm a better artist than I am a programmer. I couldn't write a program to save my life. That's why I love game Editor's, because all that hard stuff is done, and I can just concentrate on the pretty stuff <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />.

I agree with you though, about playing games that you create yourself, there's no thrill of the unexpected. But seeing something that you've created yourself come to life is more thrilling than I can put into words (it's something you really have to experience for yourself).

If Kult's Editor turns out to be any good, and people embrace it and start to use it to create their own games, then hopefully there'll be heaps of modules created by other people (like in NWN) to play.

Now, an apology, I didn't mean to imply that Divine Divinity was inferior in any way because it didn't have an Editor. What I wanted to convey was my feeling of frustration and longing, that when I finished Divine Divinity, that that was it, game over!

Because I didn't want the game to EVER end, it was the best game I'd played in a very long time, and if only it had an Editor I could have continued my adventures and played other fan created adventures forever.

There is nothing about Divine Divinity's gameplay that I want to change (except maybe mana regeneration <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />) and it is the one game that I really really wish had come with an Editor, because I love everything about it, the World, the interface, the controls, everything.

But barring this, Kult:Heretic Kingdoms looks so similar to Divine Divinity that I'm hoping it will fill the void (finger's crossed!).

Gmax is a rather good program. Free too.
I heard there is a free version of Maya... Student Learning Edition or something. You might wish to check Google.

Well, yet another reason to get another copy of 3DSMax: my copy is dead for some reason.
Wow! I'm coming in a tad late on this discussion, but I'm glad I found all of this information. I am more than interested in Kult and can't wait for its publication.

I read on the site that it had gone gold, but couldn't find anything about an Australian release.

Has anybody unearthed any info about whether anyone has taken up distribution in Australia, and if so when it might be on sale here?

Excellent <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> That's exactly the thoughts I've been trying to put into words for ages. When I tell my friends I prefer making games to playing them, they see it as strange. I don't actually like editors myself, they are almost always too restrictive. With my own code, I can create exactly the game I want.

Well, I could, if the images in my head featured deformed stickmen stabbing each other with grey lines, anyway. I'm probably the worst artist out of anyone here.

(Incidentally, I probably say this, but I'm kind of desperate. Would you be interested in joining forces to work on something? My current project looks like it might be dying due to lack of artists, and I really want to make a go of this one. Or do you have a current creation which could use some help? I'm no artist, but I love scripting)

Thanks for the suggestion Alrik, but I couldn't find anything there about an Australian release. They may not have organised anything for down here yet - we get pretty quick release of mainstream games, but lesser known titles can take a while to get here, if at all. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

Have you tried a broad search with google with the name of the game and the words "Australia" + "Release" as Search criteria ?

I often do this, even if I believe that it might bring nonsense to me. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> But sometimes I get the answers I want. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> I once even typed a whole question into Google and got a webpage with exactly that phrase ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />
The only publisher currently is P3 Interactive for Europe. I'm afraid there is no release for the UK, US or Aus at this point (other than imports) - I will ask 3D People for more info on other regions but don't expect any quick releases in other regions.

I'm not sure how much weight to give the editor - I have played a preview version, which didn't include the editor (to my knowledge) and I have interviewed 3D People and iHobo who didn't raise it at all - I suspect it's not really a major feature but I stand to be corrected.

Sounds nice this...
The main question is if the carractre system works, though... As a huge fan of the Arcanum carractre system I get the feeling it's a little bit too randomized but I don't know. It seems to be a rather good game though and I might try it, let's say for chistmass? That's a nice time since I don't have to pay for it myself, and I'll get plenty of time to finnish BD. If anyone would happen to play it, I think this is a nice place to post some comments, though (I wonder when RPGdot will release their review).

2-3 weeks for the review. I'm waiting for a final version to travel from The Netherlands to me in Australia (there were 11 new release candidates after the version I previewed).

the patch ist out


The patch upgrades Kult to v1.1. and fixes all problems with containers and even
contains a major improvement in using the containers. Several other minor problems will be solved with the patch a.o. some Spanish version bugs and a memory usage
issue.
Note: The patch does not fix already existing saves

I downloaded and installed the Demo and I must say I like it!!!

I only have 2 wishes:

I wish the game had a Mini Map so I could know where I’ve been and where I’m going.

I wish there was different camera angle choices so I could zoom in a bit closer on my character.

Other than that, it’s an interesting and fun game.

I've found a link to an interview Interview at RPGDot ... Chris Bateman ... wasn't he at Perfect Entertainment a few years ago, responsible for the Discworld Adventures ?

Yep, he was lead designer on the brilliant Discworld Noir for starters. He has since started International Hobo doing contract consulting on game scripts and dialogue. Definitely had a big impact on Kult.

A thing that slightly surprised (mildly speaking <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> ) me was that only female heroines can be played ... is that true ?

If so, then it is... unique.

My wife played the Demo Master Guroth and I remember, as I watched her play, that you need to go into Dreamland/Dreamworld to see things too.
In Dreamland/Dreamworld you'll encounter other creatures and you'll see chests and other doorways.
Your master will let you leave as soon as you have completed all of the taskes in there.

just finished the game (very short 15-20 hours in normal setting i think with all quests completed except one... well two but one is a bug...)...

liked it... good Action/RPG game...
good story. good sense of humour.
some opportunities to roleplay (even if it is mostly an action game IMO)
very simple but efficient and often funny skill system.
i was not convinced but the stat system though as i finished the game with 3/4 stats @ max lvl... (ok it's more an action game than a rpg but yet...)

i was disapointed by the ends though... there are several ends but there are all decideable in the 30 last seconds of the game by dialog boxes and not inducted by the consequences of our acts (i think it could be though... but as it is we can choose an end in complete contradiction to what we've done...)

even if there are some terrific fights in the game the "bosses" are surprisingly weaks...

ok i had some fun with that game anyway...

I just read on RPGDot that they are finally bringing this game over to North America. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> It looks like they are dropping the "Kult" part of the title and instead calling it "Heretic Kingdoms: The Inquisition."
