I though this might interest the locals...

There is a new RPG in this style currently in production. It is a sci-fi game (yay!) based in a gargantuan space-ship, Harbinger.

Harbinger Official Web Site
There is a demo available in the Files section.

The closest match I can think of is Diablo 1. You have four attributes, Melee, Ranged, Rigging, and Health. Rigging is your ability to use equipment and really only counts for item prerequisits, especially mines. The other three are self explanitary. There are three completely unique characters. Each character uses unique armour and weapons and health potions! There are no skills unfortunately. I think the only common items are Mines and Resistance Boosters. The equivilent of Charms are easily removable and interchangable, though they are specific to an item type (weapon, armour, helmet, etc.). I also think that the story may be non-linear.

Enjoy! Let's see what may come.

That's been around for a few months in the U.S.
The reviews I've seen aren't very good, so I blew it off. For example:

"With so many better options available, Harbinger's shallow gameplay and limited replay value make it difficult to recommend."

Gamespot's Harbinger Review

Are they wrong? Is it fun? I'm jonesing for a new game.

It doesn't look particularly great. I got bored during the demo. There's not enough personal development. But it may interest some poeple out there, particularly Diablo 1 fans. It is all combat, some story, and great graphics.

I made the mistake of buying it. BORING.
Totally linear, shoot, run, shoot, run repeat. Yawn save yourself a few dollars and play solitaire if you are that desperate.

I played Harbinger on the Playstation years ago. Spent alot of time running around trying to keep my character alive. Tedious, to say the least. What I did drop some money on was Enclave. Mission based hack and slash, but pretty fun, and challenging in part. The screenshots on the web do not do the game justice. It is actually a nice looking game. You can choose to play on the Light or Dark side, and you recieve new characters to play based on your progress through the game. Nifty,I recommend it.

THANKS , liked the demo, ordered it, waiting for delivery. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />What can I say ,like hack and slash. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />

Sounds like a "wait for budget release" game <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Harbinger.... I hated this game. THOUGH If it was done by Larian, I think it would have been a MUCH better game.

Just my 2P

Can't believe someone liked it, but maybe it was different on the PS. I wanted my money back after finishing...thats it? didn't take too long to finish either, 3 days, 4-6 hours per.

sounds nice, I'll see the demo on my comp now.
Posted By: Womble Re: New RPG: Harbinger - 11/06/03 02:19 AM
I played it for a while. Lost interest after it became repetitive. 1-2 hours into the game.... Oh well, 20$ down the crapper.....

I really like Harbinger. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> If I had thirty bucks right now I'd go out and buy it. There aren't many sci-fi <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/alien.gif" alt="" /> RPGs out there. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/idea.gif" alt="" /> *hint hint* Larian? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" /> While I'm waiting for Larian to come out with a kick-butt sci-fi RPG, I'm just gonna stick with <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />. Can't wait for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> either. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: LewsTherinKinslayer13 Re: New RPG: Harbinger - 16/06/03 11:58 PM
hmm. the demo was not good compared to playing hour after hour of <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> and now wating for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" />.

No wonder, its not [Linked Image]

The game was delivered. Have enjoyed the game. But there were some areas where I just wanted to get threw without hit and run,hit and run,hit and run.Wilk and his buddy are now dead.I'm at the last big bad guy [before I go down to plantet]I guess its the end of the game.If any one would like to give me some hints .I have a big <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> for you. Over all I liked the game.Something about hack and slash is appealing. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />

Your talking about Enclave right? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/offtopic.gif" alt="" /> How is Enclave anyway, in your personal opinion on having played it? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/offtopic.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: maryjo Re: New RPG: Harbinger - 19/06/03 02:11 AM
What do you mean by enclave? Someone posted after you with a off topic concerning "enclave" Are we still talking about Harbinger?
Posted By: Krull Re: New RPG: Harbinger - 04/07/03 03:35 AM
Harbinger blows monkey balls. it was the biggest waste of 30 bucks ever. I really want my money back.

If game is made like thid demo I'll pass for this.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> all the way

first ,
i was very enthousiastic about the Harbinger game.
but then after waiting more then a year for the demo to come out, i found it wasn't the game it supose to be .
maybe if the developers had more time to complete this game it would rock..
let's say it HAD potential...
Posted By: HandEFood Re: New RPG: Harbinger - 04/07/03 01:50 PM
You had to wait over a year after they started the hype. How much more time did they need?
Posted By: the_bean Re: New RPG: Harbinger - 04/07/03 02:29 PM
the story is , that there wasn't a hype at all.
on there website they had a regulary update with new pics . and i even had contact with the developers.
it was a very small company who had troubles finding a puplisher.
you can make a comparrisment with the larians!
(but <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> was a great game and harbinger wasn't <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />)
Posted By: maryjo Re: New RPG: Harbinger - 06/07/03 02:01 AM
Stupid me I did't realise Enclave was a game like? Harbinger.Oh well still stuck anyone have HINTS ? I can go back to a earlier save and try to build up.I can't get past the last boss on the ship before I head down to the planet. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" /> I've done everthing on the ship. Is there a special weapon or something.THANKS.
Posted By: maryjo Re: New RPG: Harbinger - 21/08/03 02:37 AM
Beat it a little awhile ago, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />Just added drugs to my weapon <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />Not a bad game.I would rate it a 6 or 7 out of a possible 10.

I caved and ended up buying it. I really need to find a better outlet than shopping for depression.

I was actually pleasently surprised by the game. Yes it's simple and linear and lacks replay value over the three characters, but something about it did catch me. While there wasn't much in the way of coherent story telling, what was told was interesting. And it was just simple, mindless fun. I enjoyed Diablo I for the same reasons. I've already finished it with the Culabine and have started with the Gladiator. My biggest gripe is that the stories don't really follow through. And getting to Aegis 9 was just a little too easy using an umbilical.

My bigest gripe is that they still haven't fixed some of the massive bugs that put this game back shelf REALLY fast. Had Larian been working it instead of Dreamcatcher, that game'd be bug free by now and I'd be playing it until my fingers bled instead of typing this message <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: HandEFood Re: New RPG: Harbinger - 14/05/04 06:05 AM
Which bugs? The only one I've had is that you can only have one character which must be named "Player".
Posted By: Mandrake Re: New RPG: Harbinger - 14/05/04 06:32 AM
Player.....its not exactly atmospheric is it? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
