Do MUDs count?
Posted By: mickey Re: Roleplaying? - 26/03/03 10:06 AM
what?
Posted By: Viper Re: Roleplaying? - 26/03/03 10:39 AM
yes Anthea, you'be talking a lot about MUD's today. what is that??
Posted By: Anthea Re: Roleplaying? - 26/03/03 11:12 AM
MUD. Multi-User-Dungeon. Text-based roleplaying, all you need is telnet (well... if you don't use windows. The windows telnet is just crappy. Better uses PuTTY or something like that) and a big amount of fantasy, then you connect to the MUD, log in (or for the first time, create a character) and then start with your quests, explore the world, do good (or bad) deeds, interact with other online users (depending on the MUD and the time you log in, sometimes up to 200 or more useres online at the same time), and so on.

ahaa, thanks for the info
Posted By: Aurora Re: Roleplaying? - 26/03/03 02:25 PM
I used to play MUDs years back. I don't know if there are any good non-PK ones left though. I never much cared for PK anything.

Posted By: Anthea Re: Roleplaying? - 26/03/03 02:28 PM
Well, there are some none-PKs still existent. I mainly stay in a german mud (Morgengrauen), and sometimes in TAPPMud, due to nostalgic reasons
Anyway, you can take a look at The Mud Connector to see what is available by today

And can I still play MUD? How do I connect. I have PuTTY.
Posted By: Anthea Re: Roleplaying? - 26/03/03 02:34 PM
Well, you might try to create a new session, enter the URL of the desired Mud under host name (e.g. tapp.mud.de ) and the correct port ( 23 ), as you find it in the mud connector list. You might have a look at the Terminal settings, I have checked there everything except the "DEC Origin Mode". You may give those settings a name and save them (under Session). then you click on "Open" and there you are.

I haven't ever done any of this. Is it fun?
Posted By: mickey Re: Roleplaying? - 26/03/03 03:59 PM
well, no. i meant kinda like joining a roleplaying forum and roleplaying there...
Posted By: Anthea Re: Roleplaying? - 26/03/03 08:10 PM
No? How can you say that. Playing in MUDs makes much fun, and there still is the danger of addiction
Posted By: Lilliana Re: Roleplaying? - 26/03/03 10:47 PM
Heh...speaking from the creator's point of view yeah it's fun, but only if it's balanced. I don't like non-rp pk myself. It's stupid and promotes nothing. I have nothing against a honourable challenge and duel though. And basically most non-pk muds out there are mostly hang-out-have-fun-and-cybersex oriented. I go for roleplay enforced and it's the best one can have imho. [sighs] I WANT TO TELL MY SAD TALE... sniff... I'm out of builders... and I'm dismissing builders with a shovel damn it, can't find someone who cares enough. Oh well, there, I said it.
Posted By: mickey Re: Roleplaying? - 26/03/03 11:27 PM
how can i say no? because that's not what i was talking about, silly =)
Posted By: kathythekrazykat Re: Roleplaying? - 27/03/03 03:46 PM
I'd like to try this MUD stuff, but I've never even heard of telnet or PuTTY, what is all this stuff?
Posted By: Anthea Re: Roleplaying? - 27/03/03 04:12 PM
Telnet: A text-based internet protocol, much older than http
Even windows has a telnet client nowadays (just try to open a command prompt and type "telnet") but what would you expect: that windows-telnet is just a crappy sh**. So there are programmers who do good work, and so the program "PuTTY" was developed.

Posted By: kathythekrazykat Re: Roleplaying? - 27/03/03 04:15 PM
So, how does MUD work?
What has it got to do with putty?
Posted By: Anthea Re: Roleplaying? - 27/03/03 04:20 PM
A mud is a text-based Online-RPG, so it uses the text-based interface of the telnet-protocol that you can log in, type commands, read descriptions, what is happening, what other users say or do. You might have a look at http://www.mudconnect.com/ , there you can read a bit more about MUDs and get a list of the MUDs available, what the setting is (future/past/fantasy/etc), if they are PK-MUDs or Non-PK-MUDs (PK: Player-Killing, you can kill or be killed by other players. Is absolutely forbidden in Non-PK-MUDs), and so on.
Posted By: Anthea Re: Roleplaying? - 27/03/03 04:26 PM
Oh yes, I nearly forgot: There are several special MUD-Clients, too, like TinyFugue, WinMUD, or others, that offer a somewhat more comfortable interface where you can define macros, get the text colored depending on the source (a friend tells you something, you get attacked by a NPC (non-player-character), standard-messages, etc), and other stuff. But I am either a bit old-fashioned, or the cause is that those clients didn't exist over 10 years ago when I started playing MUDs, anyway: I never used such a MUD-Client.
Posted By: kathythekrazykat Re: Roleplaying? - 27/03/03 04:37 PM
whenever I try to connect to one it says by what name do you wish to be known? and then after that it has a black mark that flashes if I click somewhere, but I can't type in my name.
Posted By: Lilliana Re: Roleplaying? - 27/03/03 11:07 PM
Aaaaaalright! My territory

step by step: first off, download simpleMU, it's the best current client you can find around. Second, download the mudconnector database so you can see all muds. It'll take a while, it's normal. Then choose a mud from the list, I suggest a rom-based one cause I know rom better and can help you off if you need anything. Then connect and disconnect and say yes when the client prompts you to store the mud in your adress list. Then go to your adress list and right click on the mud to get the properties up and change the mud type to mud all types, so you won't have that problem of not seeing 1/3 of the screen. Then connect again, give name, pass, chosse race class sex, and don't customise at first if it has customisation. typing help brings about all helpfiles. If you want to use numpad as directional go to actions on the top bar and click it, it's helpful. Anything else ask away, I'll help if I know.

addendum: btw if you want a really good mud to start off got to afterlife. It's not my mud, but it's my favourite. The people there are extra helpful, it's one of the oldest ones in existence, but it's not role play. Given that you'll have some of the immortals in there to help you though, and you're dead new to mudding, i really sugest it. If you go there, start in the village of Taheria, not New Thalos.

Where can you find simpleMU and how do you download mudconnector?
Sorry to be a pest.
Posted By: mickey Re: Roleplaying? - 29/03/03 07:12 PM
that's okay. with your avatar you cna post as much as you want =)
Posted By: Anthea Re: Roleplaying? - 31/03/03 11:40 AM
simpleMU: Have a look at http://www.mudconnect.com/ and see under Resources->Mud Clients. There you have the list of the Mud clients, and simpleMU is there, too.

PuTTY, the shell that keeps MUD together. Hehe, funny acronyms...
Posted By: Winterfox Re: Roleplaying? - 05/04/03 08:34 AM
I'm leery around online roleplaying. Not only am I a horrible roleplayer due to being accustomed to the role of storyteller, I find that most RP forums are infested with God-Moders, also known as Mary Sues. Especially free-form RP. You know the type--

Name: Aphrodite Hera Goddessa
Age: Immortal, so age is irrelevant
Background: Parents killed, dark mysterious past, blah, blah. In short, my character is an angst princess.
Race: Quarter-angel, quarter-vampire, quarter-human, quarter-elf, with some mongrel fairy, werewolf, Sith, draconic, dryad, nymph, unicorn blood somewhere in the mix.
Abilities: is connected to (insert the main source of magic/power in the RP here, like the Force), and so is indestructible and can use all kinds of magic/psychic powers/etc. under the moon and the sun.

(Note: The name "Aphrodite Hera Goddessa" isn't made up. It's a name of a girl in a horrifyingly bad fanfic. I still can't get over the "Goddessa" part. Can we say pathetically uncreative?)
Posted By: mickey Re: Roleplaying? - 06/04/03 11:25 AM
that is pretty lame...
Posted By: BeeGee Re: Roleplaying? - 06/04/03 04:46 PM
I couldn't agree more. Where's the fun in starting life with all the power, all the answers, and absolute invulnerability? How can you have an adventure if nothing is beyond your reach?

For my part, I prefer to play new low-level characters and earn them an heroic future, than to start out "above average" and rest on the laurels of an heroic past.

In a nutshell, I yearn for the journey, not the destination.
