rumors have begun to spread that the polar ice cap has melted 30% from the past 10 years..........

this was told to me by an undisclosed source....perhaps to prevent panic
but the word must be spread

lol, i had the "we're doooomed" feeling during *aardrijkskunde(?)*
In a few years we'll be able to plant babanatrees in holland and if the ice caps keep melting this way then holland wont last for more then about 20 years (or less)...
and while i hear these things and much other things like it i think: "why the HELL am i still going to school"

and bluefire what i heard is that the seas have lifted 30cm and not that 30% is melted, but i could be wrong (too)...

srry for my bad english here im still half asleep....

You mean "Geography"?

Remember I told you guys some time ago, when the movie "The day After Tomorrow" was out, that this could really happen? All I got was laughter, joking and being called a nutcase... I don't wanna say: "I told you..."

1 word; Cr*p !!
Posted By: DevDict Re: Natural Disasters during this year - 09/10/05 09:12 PM
As I expected, that was b u l l s h i t.
Here they say that since 1979, 20% of the polar caps melted away. That would be 20% in 26 years which is NOT the same as 30% in 10 years. Please refrain from posting unconfirmed speculations in the future.
and if you notice in the bottom the text reads 2003

2 years later soon to be 3 its 2005
Posted By: DevDict Re: Natural Disasters during this year - 10/10/05 02:37 AM
So... you implying that 10% of the caps melted in the last 3 years? Your brain and you aren't big pals, are you?

Posted By: the_bean Re: Natural Disasters during this year - 10/10/05 04:40 PM
riiiiight...(doktor evil thingy)
i don't know but 1 picture on the internet doesn't prove a lot, then again maybe everything.

let's assume that the ice caps were beginning to melt from 1979.
but the rate of melting could be NOT linear.
at the beginning ice melted very slowly. bigger mass.
and let's say that the intensity of "warming" the ice got bigger trough the years, -> more greenhouse gasses, then it is possible that the melting rate the last 5 years could be like x-times greater then the first 5 years...

but then again, why am i replying with my own theories instead of hard evidence???
Mmm...lazyniss
Posted By: DevDict Re: Natural Disasters during this year - 10/10/05 04:53 PM
One picture on the internet as evidence beats no evidence, especially since the picture's source is NASA.

I might seem like a bit harsh here. Possibly.
Nevertheless, information without a source is disinformation.
listen deva dick do you have issues or something? I think what you said is quite disrespectful and low. My statement was just leting others know what i heard about the ice caps and all you did was flame me......your an [nocando]# maybe you should grow up huh? and the fact that the moderators let people get flamed without doing anything speaks volumes of thier character and values.

this is a public forum on the internet
there is no excuse for your behavior

@ Virgo

The mods are very busy working on the Divinity 2 project.
I guess they did not notice this thread yet.
If you really feel insulted you have to send a PM to one of them.

DevDict and you are very old members in this forum and most of the people like you both.
It is a stupid argument.

i can handle the outrageous criticism that you force on others but when you insult me......and i let it go for a day......then you don't even apolgize within that time frame i take it personal just as you took it when i accidently misspelled your name

With the absence of mods, I guess we have to resolve the conflicts on our own.
First, I didn't expect you to take this so seriously. I know my sense of humour might be brutal sometimes, but... well, never seen anyone react like you. I suppose I owe you my apologies.
You did not offend me by misspelling my name but I thought you tried to insult me back.

Now, since this is the internet, you eventually end up being trashed by a random person you do not know. Happens often. I have stopped taking seriously everything I see online, with some notable exeptions. When someone trash talks to me, I reply if it's worth it or do not if it's not. I am not easy to hurt or shock in real life as well as online.

I have already been treated like trash online. I was not hurted but mad.
I answered with a post cynically ironic.
And i did not leave the forum.

Devdict is not a bad person but he is very rude.
I don't think he hurted you on purpose.
As i said before i like you and i like him and i don't want to see one or the other leaving the forum.

The only thing i can say is that i am really sorry to see how you have been hurted.

Right...Nuff said! let's leave it at that before it turns into a "Natural Disaster" for this Forum.

kindly take this to PM, DATD/DevDict & Virgo.

the rest don't have to be involved. shouldn't be anyway.

PLEASE?

PLEASE!

On topic:

Melting ice caps, hurricanes, earthquakes - yes we had a number this year. Possibly, in the case of hurricanes definitely (we had a 'V' name hurricane this year, the first ever since hurricanes are named, and the season ain't over yet), it is more than average - but these things happen in geological cycles (which means looong time). I am not saying that these cycles aren't accelerated by influence of human 'civilization', but nonetheless, the cycles also are natural.

Two factors influence our awareness - 1. speed of communication, meaning that we know of any events almost in real time of their occurence, and 2. the fact that we have global records enabling us to visualize long term trends.

Let's however not forget (referring to my sig), information also is a resource that should be treated wisely...
I've seen enough pitures of once ice-covered mountains in the alps (even ones that date from looong before the NASA was even created ) to be persuaded that ice is melting, at least on high mountains in the Alps, in areas what we call "Gletscher" (don't know the English word now).

So this discussion is senseless/pointless to me.

Posted By: Plowking Re: Natural Disasters during this year - 11/10/05 02:46 PM
There are a lot of speculative reports about how are summers are going to keep getting hotter, the winters colder, the gluf stream slower, etc. but at best our records can only go back so far, so can we say for certain these things are not just part of the planets life-cycle?

But then I suppose our gases are fecking up the atmosphere all right, and that's only in the last 100 years.

Anyway...a more immeditate disaster has claimed up to 33,000 lives and counting. Earthquake in Kashmir.

I'd imagine it would be the last 200 years. It was probablly whorse in the 1800:th sentury, at least in europe (not much industries elsewhere).

In geological scale, these years are tiny, not worth to mention at all.

In human time-scale however ...

I'm no scientist nor a very learned person (in school terms). But all I know is that we humans have played with Mother Nature and all its laws like it was a game of monopoly. There were no limits to the damages we did. Now we have to pay the price.
It's as simple as that.

@ DevDict
Deva is the Sanskrit word for "god, deity". In Hindu mythology, the devas are opposed to the demonic Asuras.
Only Alrik noticed that this should be a compliment for you

I wonder if it was an oxymoron: after all, Hindu beliefs in Atman and Brahman should negate gender distinctions between gods, right?
