Considering the fact that not everybody was very happy with the way the handled the launch and later the support for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />.
Same questionAnswer: no comment, so far <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
I hope not... for the name's sake <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> please not <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />
cdv pr-guy :"Say...how about we call it :Riftrunnery Riftrunner?"
cdv-head honcho :"What a good idea! Seeing how much positive feedback we got from Divine Divinity! Go for it!"
Lar : " sigh "
SOME ppl can always learn from their mistakes.........sometimes, right kinslayer.... ???
but.........is this one of those times for CDV...??
that is the question........?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />
Well, lets hope the Larians can find a real publisher that will actually try to sell and support the product!
Amen........bruther! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
what jurak? leARN, how do u learn? yeah i'm working on being good. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" />
I feel sad for all the folks who didn't get and play <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> because CDV
dropped the ball on selling it here in the states. As we have discussed over and over how commercial the U.S. is, I am still suprised they didn't push it more. "SIGH" Perhaps <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> will get a better shot. It looks great! Bet it plays great too! I can't wait!
WeLL MeT!!......my great flying friend! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />
I am glad i picked it up a whim...
But, i did not know about it, it sounded cool on the box...
yes, very glad that I saw it in PC Gammer, with the demo, and then ran to my store and got it.
i first "met" the game on "shrimpTV" a (for me), popular game tv show.
I saw Lar in a iron closset playing with his laptop and the closset just collapst on his head. verry funny. but after the previeuw of this game i was selled to the Larians. Forever? probably yes! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
cdv pr-guy :"Say...how about we call it :Riftrunnery Riftrunner?"
cdv-head honcho :"What a good idea! Seeing how much positive feedback we got from Divine Divinity! Go for it!"
Lar : " sigh "
ROFL!!!

riftrunnery riftrunner....
... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" />...
http://www.neoseeker.com/Games/Products/PC/riftrunner/index.htmlthats sounds like this publisher has Riftrunner catched. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />
CDV is not the publisher.
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/idea.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/freak.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/party.gif" alt="" />
So then happy <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" />ing <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
CDV is not the publisher.
Great news! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
no, not great, just FANTASTIC NEWS !!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/party.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/party.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/party.gif" alt="" />
the next Q is ofcourse: "Who is the publisher then??"
I would call them "fantastic" when I know the publisher they're using for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
ppppuuuuuuuhhhh. that sounds good. CDV wasn´t good for DD so it wouldn´t be better for RRR.
fine, fine <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> (but: poor elgi <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />)
Publishers always suck. It's a gaming industry rule or something. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
I hope <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> gets a good publisher though, because it's well-deserved. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />
I would call them "fantastic" when I know the publisher they're using for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Well, the news that CDV isn't on itself is fantastic, that's what I meant, let's hope the new publisher is better
CDV is not the publisher.
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
yeah it is good news <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
Great news! I'm sure that with Divinity's success alot of better publishers would be willing to publish <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" />.
Perhaps the new publisher would like a verb in the name, so now it will be called :
Riftrunnerd Riftrunner.
Actually, then it'd probably be something like: Riftrunning Riftrunner <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />
So if it's not gonna be published by CDV, then why can't the name still be
just...... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> ,
I figure that's a cool enough name right there, make a nice package,...
with some, in-game screenshots on the back, an informative in-depth manual,
and...throw in a Larian sticker for my comp.......that'd be nice!!
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> ...

... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />
yes, several Larian stickers, need a bumper sticker ya know.
need a bumper sticker ya know.
what for?? or should I say where for?? to put on yer forehead??
Ok, so the obvious question now is, is there a publisher yet, and if so who <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/question.gif" alt="" />
I'm guessing that we won't find that out pretty soon. maybe in september or so... hey, it's just what I think, "me know nothing"
LOL
rifting riftrunner
idd who is going to publish riftrunner, or did Larian dump CDV and still looking for a new publisher, wich seem unlikeley, cus the succes DD had many publisher schould be eger to publish its successor.
prrr Publy Publishing Publisher
I'd like to see Atari publish this <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />
i guess they won´t, but they published Neverwinter Nights very good imho.
I am glad CDV will not be publishing the new game. Out of all the newsletters I recieved from them, only 3 of them even mentioned <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />! Pitifull! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/down.gif" alt="" /> When I recieve news from them nowdays, I glance and delete. I thought it shamefull the way they treated our Larians! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" /> I guess I am still not over it... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />
I have already "opted out" from their Newsletter.
I'd like to see Atari publish this <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />
Dear god I hope not. Atari has messed up NWN twice now (the original and the expansion) with their crappy CD's, packaging as well as support. A lot of the CDs shipped with the original NWN literally developed cracks, and customers had to return those CDs and pay for the shipping themselves. I hear the expansion has similar in-box problems. Scandalous.

atari published ut2003, and some copies shipped with an orange manual (text being orange instead of black). I think they said something that guy mixing the colors made some mistakes there. lol
Hope it's not ATARI.
I have a strong dislike for that company. For once it's the only who ship games in cheap CD sleeves.
Also I have bad luck with games published by Atari <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />.
I have already "opted out" from their Newsletter.
Good Idea. IMHO
I've never liked CDV, so I didn't even get the newsletter, didn't trust it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" />
I have already "opted out" from their Newsletter.
yes i notisted too that CDV didn't make an announcement for the new patch from divinity in there newsletter! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" />
yeah, why I haven't cancelled that stupid newsletter yet, I don't know
I am just too lazy to cancell it. LOL
um me and my ignorance again but wot was divine divintity going to be called before cdv were going to be publishing it? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Divinity: the sword of lies
hehe...I think, 10 years ago, CDV was that company, which published [color:"orange"]DooM in germany...so they must be really cool!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
euh ..now CDV ,isn't "cool" anymore.
Not for me that is ....
they "screwed" it up with the publishing for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />
Divinity: the sword of lies
ahh right that wus better.
hehe...I was just kidding!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />
but I think CDV would have been the perfect publisher for Attic(anyone remembers that company???...Marian surely remembers them <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif" alt="" /> )...at the end both companys really sucked!
they "screwed" it up with the publishing for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />
Yeah, cdv sure made a good example of how to NOT sell a game...
they made it hard to get it here in America.
is that the same "attic" as the record company? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />
I don't think so, but about CDV; crap Sie ich hasse den! if you know German, don't read it, it had a nocando word in it, that should be blocked.
it didn't get blocked. I'll EDIT.
It have not a "nocando"-word but it is sensless. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />
i English its a nocando word,; I think.
is that the same "attic" as the record company? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />
no!...totally wrong <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/offtopic.gif" alt="" />Attic was the software company, which developed the
Realms of Arkania trilogy (in germany known as "die Nordlandtrilogie"), based on the DSA rpg system. They also worked together with the larians on a crpg called "LMK", until Attic went bankrupt and nearby ruined the larianstudios, too <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" />
by the way...Marian was a former employee of Attic!
Hopefully Larian will get a supportive publisher.
Another of my favorite Developers, Sir-Tech (Creaters of Wizardry), have stopped making games at the moment because they couldn't get a publisher for Wizardry 8. They ended up signing an exclusive shipping deal with one or two stores.
The game ended up winning numourus awards but no one wanted to distribute it because it didn't have mass blood or mature themes. (Bare in mind it had a solid engine a very long and serious story that branches out depending on how you played the game and multiple beginnings and endings.
Yes. VERY sad about Wizardry 8: it was a great game and Sir Tech Canada was a great comany which made games like Jagged Alliance 1&2 and Wizardry 1-8. The game was published by Electronic Boutique, I think. The game had awesome reviews yet I don't remember anyone buying it. Such a shame! I hope RR will get a good publisher... AT least Codemasters or Ubi-Soft... Err... No, Ubisoft publishes only it's own games...
Welcome, Fox! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> welcome to the forums wolfnfox......
tis but, another canadian i say! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Ya, Wizardry is the series that introduced me to video games and I have been loyal to Sir-Tech since (I also have Jagged Alliance)
Honestly though I couldn't choose a publisher right now the industry doesn't seem very stable, there are new ones coming in and going out on almost a daily basis and the ones that are stable only publish from developers they own or only publish a certain genre of game.
I've bought Wizardry 8 two months or so ago, and I'm currently playing it (being the first W. game for me).
I like it *very much* and always keep looking at the forums at
www.rpgdot.com for hints. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
I think it's a kind of shame that this game is rarely available here in Germany (at least that's my personal, subjective impression), although it is so good.
I had no problems getting Wiz 8 - my former trader was very helpful - even got the English version. Smaller shops usually offer a better service, but are more expensive (US version, 2001 = 60-70 EUR)
Kiya
Well back to the topic there are a few up and coming publishers that are worth looking into.
Dreamcatcher: They created 'The Adventure Company' for there adventure game line and are using this label for Action and RPG's
GOT Game: Have some decent game but I've only seen them in the bargain bin arena.
Microids: Lately they have put out some decent titles, (Warrior Kings) though I think they are now a branch of Dreamcatcher since the last few games they put out in Canada are the same as Adventure Company (Syberia, Post Mortom)
All the others I can think of have been bought or have closed.
There are many other European based publishers. As the German market has been proved to be important to Larian Studios, they might go for a European one again. From the top of my head:
There are some Russian publishers: 1C, Russobit, Buka
There is AxelTribe in Spain
There is Koch and Big Ben in the UK
There is JoWood and CDV in respectively Austria and Germany.
And there probably are a whole bunch I forgot also.
They are at the top of my head, becaase these are the publishers I have had contacts width in one or the other way <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
JoWood is pretty good if I'm not mistaken, so is EA, Atari, ...
It all depends on how you look at it I guess. As far as getting PR stuff from the publishers, Atari equals 'SUCKS' and seeing the mess Jowood made of publishing and distributing Gothic I don't think much of them either. If Larian Studios is getting involved with Jowood then they are getting involved in a very instable company. They were close to bankrupcy not to long ago.

Atari sucks indeed. Is Pirahna part of JoWood or...?
Piranha Bytes are the developers of Gothic and are not a part of Jowood. Jowood 'only' publishes the game.
Gothic I was published in Germany by Shoebox - never heard of this one before.
JoWood - Don't they do / publish Spellforce ?
Publishing Gothic 1 has been a strange and troublesome path I recall. The German publisher was Egmond Interactive, I believe. I don't think they exist anymore. Jowood took over a lot of games from them, but if Gothic was part of that or not was unclear. Jowood claimed it was, Piranha bytes stated differently. In the end I believe the German version was published by JoWood and distributed under the Shoebox label. But I could be off base here.
The internation publisher is Xicat and published the game (English version) for: North America, France, Benelux, Scandinavia, England, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and Korea.
Why dont they ask interplay <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

Ah! Just checked, no, I wanted to ask:
"Is Fishtank part of JoWood?"
Fishtank no longer exists. All the games they published have been bought up by JoWood. Which was a shame, they had a terific PR lady there and JoWood didn't even come close to what she was capable of doing.
*Sigh*. Fishtank was a good company. They published some nice stuff...
Fishtank...I only remember Evil Islands from Fishtank. Can't say i can recall any other games. I know i've seen the logo of the fish hitting his head against the aquarium in several games tho <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Why dont they ask interplay <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
Interplay is dead
Fishtank...I only remember Evil Islands from Fishtank. Can't say i can recall any other games. I know i've seen the logo of the fish hitting his head against the aquarium in several games tho <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
These are the games they had:
Archangel
Arx Fatalis
Aquanox
Beambreakers
Cartycoon
Etherlords
Evil-Islands
RIM The Game
Swine
1914
As to Interplay, they are nor dead, they might be dying though <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
Last time I heard about Interplay was several months ago and they were in some severe financial trouble as well as in some legal problems. I haven't heard a thing regarding them since.
Interplay has been bought by Titus. Neither Titus, nor Interplay are doing very well.
i don't really know anything but what about microprose and hasbro interactive <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />
if it goes all hat bad with th epublishers..
how on earth can a small game company sell there producs?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
by doing it themselves? or is that allowed?
i know of a game you had to downlaod from there site!
it was called "ancient evil"
a snippit from the gamespot website:
[color:"pink"] Australian game developer Silver Lightning has announced the release of its latest role-playing game. Ancient Evil: The Curse of the Snake Cult is being distributed through a partnership with Softwrap. Using Softwrap's technology, the demo version of the game will also include the full version, which can be unlocked by purchasing the game for $19.95. Ancient Evil can be found on CD-ROMs included in magazines, or it can be downloaded from the official Silver Lightning Web site.
Soo basicly the developers distribute there own game? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" />
Which means you can get the unlocking code off somewhere and use it yourself and all your friends. No, I don't like that.
Games don't appear just like that on the shelves in shops. They need to be distributed, so you need distribution channels. Also you need to buy shelf space to make it noticeable, without it the game ends up somewhere in the back of the shop. They need to make and place ads. As a distributor you buy many ads and thus get a discount in magazines.
All this does require knowledge and expertise, which a developer normally not has. It's not impossible but it's hard and you don't get any money until the end, which is probably the hardest part.
There is an interesting discussion on how distribution works,
here.
Lol, that's six pages of text, can't you give a small blurp instead <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
I didn't need any publication, i bought it just because it was Belgian (supporting the nation's economy and so on...) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> , then saw whether it was good or not and you all know how lucky i was <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
Here are a few other publishers I found while going through a computer magazine
Tri Synergy Inc.
Ascaron
Summitsoft
Strategy First
Summitsoft seems to lean into the RPG catagory more
Strategy First I support a little bit because they Re-released some Sir-Tech programs
The others I never heard of.
@Myrtos : Sorry, but the main theme is like the title : release of the game first in the U.S. , then in Europe.
Intrestingly that's the case with AoW:SM, too.
