NPC and STAT suggestions - 05/07/03 10:41 PM
As many studios develop new rpg games this branch of computer games will develop more as this branch grants game players and developers a wide variety of choices on the aspects of the game. And of course for new games and developers it is neccesary to look back at other succesful rpgs and get inspiration to create master works. This is the reason why I am going to suggest you two things from the Planescape: Torment which created a succesful and great roleplaying environment.
I have come to realize that Divine Divinty had some aspects of Diablo where as it presented a much interactive world. I think it should go even more far from being a hack'n'slahs game. While looking through the new rift runner web site I have seen that npcs with you were fully controlled by the player ( I guess it is so like baldur's gate) and I guess they are no different than just summoned creatures that help you in combat. I think they should be semi controllable that is if you force them to do something unreasonable; attack a peasant or rat or sth they should refuse. They should also react to your actions or even speak with other npcs(like peasants in town and characters which you don't control) they should have their own ideas on the events. Ofcourse they can't buy their own equipments but atleast the player should not be able rip the npcs out of their all possessions. They should provide the player sub-quests. They should have their own limit of reputation so good npcs don't go along with a player with bad reputation and otherwise. Just kind of npcs that just have more to do with than just being carried around for killing monsters. They should even have their own impact on the game so that different treatment of npcs could even change the outcome of events. In this all I am talking about the npcs that join you keep this in mind.
About stats for years in every game but just two stats have troubled me because in a rpg game I look just more than power play and hack'n'slash. I look for roleplay and I am bored to see in every rpg game intelligence is used to increase the efficiency of spells or mana etc but if a warrior has 3 intelligence (in adnd frp games where 3 int is considered to be extremely stupid) when a riddle is asked to you which noone can answer still the set of replies that are given to you includes the true answer which for many centruies most clever people couldn't answer if you get what I mean. And I am not sure if there will be a stat for charisma in RR but in every other game it only used to improve the prices of things you can buy. But stats should be just more than that if you have low intelligence and when a question is asked to you, you should not be able to answer it or when your charisma is low reactions of other characters should be drastically different.
I know Divinity world is more like the Diablo Kind but if you can add these kind of roleplaying factors to the game you will make a unique and a excellent cross between adnd frp kind(baldur's gate, ice wind dale, planescape torment) and diablo kind.
And by the way when I said all games but two I meant Planescape Torment and fallout I and II
I think you will do a great job in rift runner and please add some information about the minimum requirements. And don't forget we are all waiting for Divine Divinty II
