It took me a while to figure this out, but I'm now sure that my lockpicks are disappearing. Any time I get some lockpicks and later try to use them, I no longer have them. Now, I can't find any more in the game and there are many quests I can't complete. It is very frustrating and I'm about to quit trying. Any suggestions?

well, I hope you don't quit

welcome to the forum BTW

have you checkied, they might be hiding under something in your inventory, and in your skills, lots of times it says you don't have something, when you do have them so look again

what version are you playing?

I'm sure I don't have them because when I try to pick a lock it tells me, "you have no lockpicks". I downloaded the latest patch about a week or 2 ago.
Posted By: LewsTherinKinslayer13 Re: disappearing lockpicks - 18/09/03 04:11 AM
sometimes they go away, when they are in your inventory, check there too.

maybe you drop them? or use them ??? this is very strange
Posted By: Dr_Loveless Re: disappearing lockpicks - 18/09/03 04:15 AM
Nope, none in my inventory. I can't seem to find anyone that sells them reliably either. You would think you could buy lockpicks at the thieves guild...

I've invested too much time to restart the game.

I think the bartender has some? not sure, and TIngalf always has alot, but I always put him away in jail

Have you talked to Finnigan in the Ducal inn cellar? In a game started after installing the 1.34 patch, he sells lockpicks. In any version, he gives you a quest to steal his magic unbreakable (with the patch) lockpicks. In a game started after installing the patch you can return the lockpicks and buy them back, but if it was started in a previous version just keep them.

Tingalf in Ars Magicana sells lockpicks, if you have not had him arrested. So does Blake occasionally and Mpenzak in Verdistis.

Sometimes lockpics, disappear after constant use. I mean you can not buy a lockpick and have it for ever. You use it sometimes and then it disappears. Then you have to by new ones. You should gather some lockpics after clearing the Aleroth area. And as the other friends here told you, you can buy from Arcs Magicana.

dissapearing lockpicks? that explains how I lost finnigans magic lockpicks!
Posted By: janggut Re: disappearing lockpicks - 18/09/03 07:05 AM
hey another canadian dude in the forum.

welcome, makabi!

about finnigan's lockpicks, u cannot exhaust them as they're magical so that means u can use them indefinitely (unless u run out of things to pick or u end the game).

IF u happen to drop finnigan's lockpicks on the ground, it'll disappear for good.
Posted By: kiya Re: disappearing lockpicks - 18/09/03 07:16 AM
Makabi, they disappear for good if you don't play version 1.0034 and put them on the ground - and they disappear if you steal Penumbra's dagger and have these lockpicks in your inventory - but in this case they're IN the guard house desk again, in all versions.
Kiya

About disappearing stuff in general: When you're encumbered this might happen (weight bug).
Posted By: Raze Re: disappearing lockpicks - 18/09/03 07:17 AM
In a game started after installing the 1.34 patch, you can drop the lockpicks on the ground.

If you broke Finnigan's lockpick by using the Lockpick skill (a bug in the 1.29 version), installing the patch will put them back in Commander Kratus' desk, to be re-stolen.

How to get Finnigan's lockpicks back
which points to the link
Lost Items - guide and directory of inventory files (see one of the replies for the method/link - before the 1.34 patch this technique could not be used).

With regular lockpicks, one breaks every time you successfully pick a lock.

thanks for the clarification, raze & kiya.

I know this is off topic, but speaking of dropping things on the ground, do not drop chests outdoors or they will disappear on you. The only way I've found to retrieve the items is to enter a building, then do the shift-scroll across the map to where the chest is. While in a building you will be able to see the chest outdoors. Click on the chest and your guy will run there and open it even though he can't see it.

weight bug and disappearing chests

Yeah I'm pretty new to the forums here so I'd probably revisit stuff I've discovered recently while playing. Although at least I had a new solution to the invisible chest that didn't involve telekinesis!

I'm not particularly wordy most of the time. The link was intended to provide more information, not chastise you for mentioning something that was discussed months ago.

Do you want to reply to the other topic with your solution, so most of the information on the problem and work arounds is available in one place?

Wow, Jarlaxle - thanks that's news for me - please, include this pic link there where you wish to post your solution. It's the same chest that disappeared in the other screenies Raze has in his thread.

It appears I can't reply to that thread for some reason. One other thing I thought I'd mention, is I somehow linked 2 chests together. I have a chest solely for storing all the potions I've found in the game. One time I found a chest in the game, that had a ton of potions. When I got it back to my house I realized it was identical in content to my potion storage chest. So I set them side by side thinking I just got a ton of extra potions for free. Then I noticed when I took from one chest, it also disappeared from the other one. I even tried moving one of the chests to a completely different area, and still they were linked in their content. Strange eh?

heh Kiya...the reason I had to figure out somehow to get the stuff out of the chest is I left a couple of quest items (manuscripts or letters) in the chest and couldn't complete a couple quests. I've found this disappearing chest happens everytime I drop a chest outdoors, although I haven't played around with it too much.

Ah, I see - I experimented the disappearing chest syndrome for a short while. I had already found out in my very first game that chests turning dark are a problem. I normally have a chest near the Ars teleporter, cause I didn't bother with a house. But these disappearing chests in all of my games always came from the castle! I didn't have probs with other ones - if I wasn't encumbered, of course. If I was, I quickly dropped an item, cause I didn't want to lose stuff

Barrels are safe, if I didn't click on them in combat mode - what I'd like to know: Did your disappearing chests come from other places than the castle? Or did they disappear if you were encumbered? Or if you stacked them and then took them up in your inventory? This bug fascinates me.
Kiya

Sidenote: Nope, I'm not wise - German saying: Even a blind hen finds a corn
Posted By: Jarlaxle Re: disappearing lockpicks - 18/09/03 07:49 PM
hmm I don't believe any of the chests I used came from the castle, however I am pretty sure the chest with the potions that somehow got linked was from Stormfist. They never disappeared in my inventory, just after I dropped them on the ground anywhere outside.

I had a house in the main starting zone until I grew out of it with my massive packratting ways. I moved into the Cursed Abbey pretty early in the game. It has huge halls to store my 50 chests all around, and close beds to sleep in. Also, it's rather close to a transporter.

One item I did have disappear on me was a barrel of poison. I had stacked 3 of them in my inventory and when I was messing with putting them in a chest one disappeared for good.

I'll test the invisible chest more tonight. I need to finish up the treasure map quest then do the Council ending too.

Side note: I took 8 years of German classes in High School and College... probably don't remember much about it being 6-7 years removed from college though...
Posted By: kiya Re: disappearing lockpicks - 18/09/03 07:57 PM
thanks for your info - guess, you were encumbered with 3 poison barrels, hm? Yes, my chests also disappeared if I put them on the ground - please, look if yours turn dark as shown in the pic then, ok?

Have fun with the treasure map quest

don't torture yourself with German - I do understand English and if not, I usually ask via PM
Posted By: Jarlaxle Re: disappearing lockpicks - 18/09/03 08:01 PM
Come to think of it my chests are still invisible out there. I can simply jump in a house and take a screenshot of them when I get home from work.
Posted By: Setharmon Re: disappearing lockpicks - 19/09/03 10:48 AM
You get that with different chests. As far as I know only chests from dungeons. I've had it happen with 2 or 3 in different games.
So you probably could try with other chests too.
Posted By: Dr_Loveless Re: disappearing lockpicks - 21/09/03 04:44 AM
Thanks for all the advice. On further study, I'm convinced there is a bug here somewhere. I can find some lockpicks and a while later (the first time I try to pick a lock), they are gone.

The hex editor hack work like a champ, however, so I'm back in action.

Thanks again.
