The apprentice of that master at cloisterwood.

This fight is insane on all the wrong levels and nearly brings my system to it's knees with all the fire on the map. You also can't see where there's even something to hit.

Much as I try, Gwydam goes down at some time with the insane amount of voidlings crawling all over. I try to buff and heal him, but nothing goes.
Had the same problem, gotten some good advice here
Who is this guy?

Me and my friend cleared the black pits entirely (both inside and outside). We killed everything and everyone. We have seen many people making screenshots of some fire covered area which seems to be where that guy got hanged, but we never encountered any boss fights there and no fire.

There's a platform with a hanged by the wrists guy. You get the quest by a lizard master in Cloisterwood. I'm not sure it triggers if you haven't got it in your log.

But the moment it triggers it's pure disaster. Not because the enemies were particularly powerful, but because there's fire all over the place. It nearly brings my rig to it's knees. There's an army of oil and fire voidwokens spawning and spewing necrofire. The one you can't put out unless you spam bless on the ground, only to start again with the next Voidwoken.

My rig was slowing down to a crawl in the process and, given that there was fire all over the place, I couldn't even see what and where to hit, since all enemies were covered in fire and virtually invisible, unless you happened to hover over them and saw the sword symbol.
IT WAS GLORIOUS! *maniacal cackle* ALL HAIL THE FIRE GOD!

Ahem.

What worked for me was the following:

Talk to the White Magister. If all magisters are hostile and attack on sight, teleport a dude up there, that will initiate the conversation nonetheless.

Switch to another character and prepare the arena, so to speak. Move the oil barrels out of the danger zone, and distribute the water barrels esp. on the ramps and in the middle of corner areas on the platforms (you know the ones where the blobs jump usually). Funnily enough they seem to be deathly afraid of water barrels.

Then group around the White Magister / your talkydude, have powerful ranged characters at the edges so they can make use of the elevation and take out the blobs asap. Be sure to equip water-based weapons and spells, or lightning if no water is available. I even had my warrior/tank equip offensive water spells just for the CC / puddle effects. When the fight starts, ignore the magister; her damage is not that problematic, and she may actually help you take out the blobs (she uses hydro! how convenient). Use a charm arrow/grenade/spell if things get sticky. Try to kill the blobs as far away from the top platform as you can. If things get very hairy, don't hesitate to drop a bless/hydro combo to give you a bit of breathing space.

The teleport method may work as well, I personally didn't make it work in the two attempts I tried it, whereas the above was more or less *cough* smooth flail... er... sailing.
My method is to get all of my party onto the highest platform, ranged skills from that height have huge reach and its a small area thats easily "cleaned" and contained. Whirlwind, water barrels and AoE cold spells work wonders as does a Ranger character.
the only problem with that is that some of the voidlings (oil and fire ones, iirc) can leap all the way from the ground level to the highest platform from certain angles, so you inevitably end up fighting in necrofire regardless of how well you plan

there's probably a way to do it if you strategize well enough, but my best recommendation would be to just

wait until you've mastered source, get everyone in your party max source so that you have as many bless charges as possible, and don't start using it until the fire voidlings show up. holy fire is a life saver in this fight,
and you don't have to worry about fire voidlings getting it because they're immune to fire anyway

another thing unrelated to the combat that i dislike about this portion is that after the battle all the voidling corpses become transparent so you have to fish around on the ground for their outlines to show up so you can loot them; the primordial ones usually have some good stuff and even the smaller ones have good money fodder sometimes
Jesus you guys really struggling with it?

Just go straight at the top of the building where the guy hangs and start fight from the top... Voids will have looooong way to reach you and before they reach you, you will already kill all the magisters, why would you even stay in necrofire lmao
i don't know if you read the thread but many people have done that and still ended up bathing in fire. some of the voidlings are able to leap all the way from the ground to the highest platform. it's also difficult to do that if the magisters are already hostile towards you
They're not any hostile if you're using brain and not fighting everything that moves... you can talk with them from the beginning of entering Blackpits and they are neutral so you freely going to the highest spot where the guy hangs and THEN starting fight.

(and yes, you can save the whole family from the magisters and still neutral speaking with the magisters who are near Gwydam).

I just solo'd that, i am playing solo Lone Wolf Shadowblade Fane and i won that fight at first attempt (not first attempt of playing this game, since i played full 4 man team Sebille avatar before, but my game got so bugged i had to start from the beginning...)
they are hostile if you attack the magisters that are throwing fire grenades at a nearby house, something that requires a persuasion check (which means it's not guaranteed to work) and that people may not pick up on their first playthrough
Nope smile
I saved the family, killed the magisters.
I also killed all the magisters after (3 guarding the Gate) and 3 throwing fire granades at the house, then i helped this guy from the basement.

Still, magisters near Gwydam were neutral to me.
then it must depend on some other mechanic. surely you don't assume people just attacked the magisters mid conversation

i've experienced both: when i didn't attack the magisters setting the house ablaze and showed the writ of passage to the magisters at the gate the ones on the top platform weren't hostile, but when i did have to kill the ones at the gate then they were

it's not that hard to understand why people didn't do what you did, not a good idea to assume everyone is incompetent
Dunno, this game is so random that surely noone of us can say why i had them neutral even if killed every other magister before. But ye, i managed to keep them neutral and start to fight from the top.
It was a long and glorious fight. I stepped in unprepared but managed it, but I'm on Classic, so I pity Tactician players. I was mainly on the highest platform and took most care for saving Gwydian from death by healing and shielding him. Luckily the dump idiot did not leave the platform.

About 6 to 7 blobs jumped onto the platform and it was covered in necrofire soon. Unfortunately I had not memorized Bless on two of my chars, that was a bit annoying. hahaha So I had to stand through it. I used what I had plus my only rain spell to extinguish the necrofire, I had cursed steam there most the time but that was not as bad.

A great help were shielding skills. I think I would not have won without any deaths without these skills. My main is custom and Dome of Protection is just awesome. I also have Mending, Fortify, Frost Armor and Soothing Cold on him and the latter two on my summoner too.

A second great help were my summons. Lohse's incarnate blocked the only ladder up to the platforms in the late fight, useful because the big blobs cannot jump. My main and the bone widow summon on my two-handed/Necro Ifan guy blocked the ramp. So after the first chaotic stages with the jumping blobs the fight became much more controllable.

It is a good idea to use fire to set ablaze the big fields of oil left after the first wave of oil blobs. The small oil blobs do not have any armor, so you can use both magical and physical damage. As I've a purely physical damage group, I had to use the few fire grenades I had not sold to create a sea of flame. The fire blobs later are healed by the fire but that's not that important because they have to come to you. If you have a rain spell or water sources, you can then weaken them, or just kill them on the platform. Anyway, I found the oil blobs much more annoying and dangerous.
Grats on beating the encounter, Geala. It's funny how perceptions can differ, I had absolutely no trouble with the oil blobs but the fire blobs were giving me nightmares at the end.

Re: Hostility of magisters: I don't know how it works. All magisters were immediately hostile to me, but I was able to force a conversation by sneaking around and then teleporting one of my characters into the vicinity of the White Magister at the very top. That forced a conversation and made all magisters in the vicinity neutral instead of hostile.

Yeah, but how do you free Gwydam then? They turn hostile if you make any attempt at getting him from the gallows.

Just keep him alive. Which is admittedly a bit of a classic escort quest as it's also a protracted fight with the friendly local voidwoken and he has no sense of self-preservation.

I managed to keep him alive all through the fight with lots of healing and buffing. Then he asks for his family, takes off and decides it's a nice day to run through the raging fire. Quest closes with Gwydam is dead.
you can cast at the portraits at the top of the screen , you can also press O and enter tactical camera mode and also a simple click on portrait to zoom to them.

O = birds eye view kinda. also stops any blockages getting in the way of clicking them "enemies".

That's bad. I took advantage from the fact that I'm not the fastest player, the fire was long gone before I talked to him and he left the platform.
Let him tank shit for you for a bit and then just teleport him away to Africa with regeneration at some point.and that's it.

You have insane range on Teleport there, you can simply put him in a "box" somewhere and he won't even move.
Standing on the top level and just throwing up Dome of Protection basically kept me immune to any sort of damage for the entire fight. It doesn't matter how many of those stupid blobs jumped up onto the platform next to me. I smashed their faces and just regenerated all my magic armor every turn from the Dome.

As for the larger blobs, used my ranger to pick them off from high ground, plus throwing knife from my rogue, and if I wanted to speed things along I just phoenix dive Red Prince down there to finish one of them off, and then have my wizard cast teleport on him to bring him back up to my dome of protection.

I found this particular fight to be insanely easy *shrug*

Your group doesn't suffer much, that's true. It's only if you want to save that Gwydian character it gets a chore. That guy constantly runs into harms way. Through the fire mostly, which brings him to his knees pretty quickly.

Also, with the insane amount of fire everywhere, you don't see where these darn blobs are hiding. You have to basically hover your mouse over the whole landscape to see when the pointer turns into an attack symbol.
I had no problem saving Gwydan (kept him healthy and armored up all the time), but once that long-ass fight was over my team almost wiped out because of the dialogue that kicked in right after the fight - everyone was still standing in the fire of course AND they all tried to run up to my leader so they were taking damage in real time all throughout the dialogue. -_- I had to quickly click through it and still 2 people dropped dead by that time. It would not be fun to repeat all that just because of something silly like that...
Old thread but if you do manage to save him (and maybe if most of his family are alive?) head back to their house and he'll reward you.
