Hey gang, I just got to the end of the Tiefling Refugee plotline and I wanted to ask you guys what you thought of the after-party and the romance options. So as many people have criticized that the companions are a little rough round the edges, and definitely not as warm and cuddly as many other RPG games have made their companions. But what I like about the companions featured in BG3 so far is that they feel genuine to the world of D&D.
Its a very difficult world to live in and to be an adventurer in you really do have to take off the rose colored glasses and be prepared for the challenges that life throws at you. Shadowheart is agreeable for the most part, but can be cruel. Lae'zel is basically an interdimensional alien, so I expect her to be completely off her rocker in comparison to morality and the general mindset of your average Forgotten Realms species. Astarion is just a horny vampire slut, which I realized within .03 seconds of meeting him. Gale is pretty cool, I am still learning his story, and Wyll is a demons cuck trying to hide behind the bravado is a swordsman. What I am getting at here is that this is a rag tag team of unlikely companions and the chemistry between them isn't exactly clear.
Now, idk how you guys have played but my main character has been butting heads with his party constantly. I am playing a knowledge hungry wizard who is desperate to unlock the powers of magic and the universe. I've been using my illithid powers, selfishly unlocked the secrets from the Book of Thay, and have in general been pretty cruel and merciless. Lae'zel is mad at me for using my powers and not resisting the Mind Flayers, Shadowheart is also mad at me, but we have decent conversations now and again, and Astarion is just kinda there. However, at the party both Astarion, and Shadowheart want to bang. Lae'zel hinted at it, Wyll and Gale are just hanging out.
What I am getting at is that after all the party strife the companions still want to romance. Have you guys experienced the same thing? Am I wrong for thinking that the party dynamics and your relationships with companions are kinda broken? It just doesn't seem to make sense and it killed my immersion. What are your thoughts and opinions, lets dicuss!
I've had the same experience. Shadowheart hinted at the possibility of romance but that I'd been too against her, which was kinda weird because I'd been playing in line with her approval throughout the game so far, but I guess it was just a matter of not having met her approval requirement. Shadowheart didn't hint at anything at all, Gale expressed interest as did Asterion and I think Wyll did but I can't quite remember. So it all felt kinda rushed and awkward, especially since I had only rested at camp about three or four times up to that point so there hadn't been a lot of interaction between us yet.
So, we have options:
1. Shadowheart - zealot lunatic, who didn't trust anyone.
2. Homicidal savage, who are sneaky enough to trying feed on us in sleep.
3. Extradimensional alien, who looks like a rat.
4. Adult child with hero complex.
5. And possessed wizard (ok, this one is not bad enough for romance).
I am actually romance Mintara and join the Absolute, at least she is honest with us.

I wish I had rested three or four times. There have been some dicey combat situations in my playthrough so far. I agree it definitely feels rushed and awkward, I hate to do comparisons between two VASTLY different games but in games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect you don't ever reach the climax or romance until the very end. So maybe our minds are hard wired by other RPG's to expect a longer relationship development. Maybe there are plans that we're unaware of that will make sense as the game continues to be developed.

Hahaha true enough! I actually flirted with the Liefling girl, I can't recall how to spell her name but it started with an 'L'.
We'll see how that pans out, but I'm not really feeling the romance with any of the companions so far.
I hadn't seen this topic and recently created one similar in Suggestions. The "romance" happens fast and makes no sense. There definitely should have been way more conversations where characters at least show an interest in you before hand. Get some flirting happening back and forth at least. As is, the companions don't really care for your character and hate it when you start a conversation with them. They go from that to, "let's find someplace quiet"?

Going by the Shadowheart's romance scene, those aren't the climax of the romances:
it is just a night chat with a kiss at then end

Ahh okay, I saved and logged off the game last night before that scene would occur. I still think that the relationship building is weak right now. But that is what these discussions are for!
Well, I did romance Astarion in my first run (also, I dunno, he didn't come off as gay to me in the least, just a shameless flirt - also, yes, I'm a married woman so)... it was real quick tho, he goes on from hating my good ways, to liking me letting him do his thing with his vampirism and then suddenly, it's party time and he's like 'let's bang, mkay?'. And then... I realized a missed a lot of content with companions cause I made it a point to not use tadpole powers a single time during my first playthrough through the EA. Was curious if it would make any difference, but nope. You just skip a crapload of content that way... maybe Larian has something planned for people like me further down the line? Anyway, I decided to make more or less the same choices again, but this time whenever I see a tadpole dialogue option, I will take it, save scum it if need be. Like I'm legit curious how much extra content there is for players who just let themselves be corrupted by the tadpole. Come full release I ofc will do 2 runs again - 1 with 0 tadpole abusing, and another with full blown mind control and see the differences in endings. Larian, you best not make it goddamn Mass Effect 3 - 3 color ending fiasco. Just saying. :P
I have to be honest and say I find none of the companions interesting in the romantic interest way, Lae'zel comes the closest. If I could, I'd choose Halsin or Zevlor over all of them.
I have to agree that the romancing goes rather fast. So far I had only 1 love interest that was mutual, but there were allready intamite moments at the celebration campfire.

Ive only gotten to one kiss in EA, which doesnt seem a lot 25ish hours into the game. Afterwards I even got the cold shoulder treatment. Hopefully romances are a game-long thing that will evolve over time.
What did feel a little weird was how every companion seemed interested at the celebration, no matter what standing I had with them in general. Lae'zel dissapproves of everything I do and she was still dissappointed when my character went for Shadowheart.

That's less interest in you and more her dislike for Shadowheart, I think.
Lae'Zel hated my choices the entire game and she also complained about my characters interest in Asterion, and after that she said she's gonna bang Wyll. You can even ask her how she liked the night with him after you've had your own with your love interest. I'll bet even if she bangs Asterion she'd complain about him being inadequate. LMAO Now I wish there was a way to confront Wyll/Asterion/whoever else she chooses about their night with Lae, making it even more awkward.
The whole romance thing is just out of the blue. You are in a party talking to someone you barely know, and suddenly from nowhere they tell you "if you weren't so bad to me maybe I would've allowed you to be with me tonight"... what is this? I don't even know you guys? why every single companion suddenly need to tell me how they will or won't have sex with me? and if they don't like me why be so passive aggressive and tell me how I missed the chance to sleep with them? people don't talk like this, it's weird.
The more I play, the more I wish that every conversation with your companions had the option "Stick your dagger through their eye."

Yes, exactly. There needs to be more leading up to their interest in us. Like I love romances in games, I just wish they were a bit more fleshed out. I also tried messing with the tadpole a bit, got those dreams and stuff I spoke of earlier, I think I understand why Larian was asking us to play evil - cause as of now, these dreams and getting these tadpole powers fleshes the companions out a bit, but yeah, you only get these cutscenes IF you use the illithid tadpole options on people.
For example during one of these cutscenes, you feel sick and Lae wants to kill you and everyone in the party. After you sleep and get that dream with that person of your dreams from character creation, you go to having a daytime in your camp, you can talk to each companion, they also had weird dreams and you can share your experiences with them, or get them mad at you. I wish there was something similar if you DON'T use the tadpole powers AT ALL, like you having dreams, but of a different kind perhaps? Something is better than nothing. Like for example, you could have a dream about the tadpole wondering why you don't succumb instead of the offers of more power you get when you use it.

I agree with this. I had all the companions wishing to bone down with my player character and being put out when I chose someone else, and it was so jarring based on their cagey and distant dispositions that they had displayed throughout so far, that it threw me out of the game. The only one I could see doing this regardless of approval ratings is Astarion because it feels like seduction is how he usually got things done in the past. I feel like Lae'zhal and Shadowheart should be complaining about even having a party in the first place.
The whole "talking to all these people, who are virtually strangers and who have treated me as a stranger or acquaintance at best, about who I'm having sex with tonight" is extremely awkward and should be reconsidered.
This is still in Early Access and Larian said this might last a year. The romance that we have currently available in the game is just a taste to give us an idea of what they are doing. That's why when your character has sex it says "Under Construction" because they are still working on it. If you feel the romance is rushed, keep in mind that the game is not finished yet. When you got the Early Access, it tells you to give Larian feedback so they know what they should add or work on and that's what these forums are for.
The party romances are especially awkward since some companions have flirted with each other (Gale with Shadowheart, Astarion with Gale) but never with the player character as far as I experienced. Suddenly having half the camp go "we'll bang, okay?" without any buildup was a disorienting let down.
I adore romance in games, so am reluctant to complain about it when honestly I'm just happy it's included. But the anticlimactic intimacy scenes speak to a bigger problem with companions, I think.
There aren't enough "little" moments with the party to really care that much about them, and the moments currently included are completely miss-able. For example, I completely went from hating to adoring Astarion after the giddy way he reacted to Ethel at the tiefling camp. When I replayed, that reaction triggered for Shadowheart instead and I lost out on appreciating a large part of Astarion's chaotic-playful personality.
I only talk with companions if I they have a yellow exclamation mark, but I'm still early game level 3 or so, because restarted many times.
So don't know if all this "romance" making sense yet, just one thing; even if someone doesn't agree with your decisions and even if hates you -- sex is just sex, nothing more. Can be more, it's great if it is, but still makes sense to just "let's find someplace quiet" and get over with it, without wasting time with emotional baggage's.

I agree with you on this. I think the romance we got in game was a test run to get some feedback on how we want it to develop, how well it plays out, bugs, etc... We are just test-running different parts of the game even if it feels like a cohesive piece it could all change by the time the game releases. Combat, party interactions, exploration, romance, etc.. all is being evaluated. So everyone into romances should give constructive feedback on what you would like to see more or less off.
If the party scenes were included just to get feedback on romance in general, then that's fair. I enjoy romances in games too, and admittedly I'm a slow burn kind of person so that may be why it all felt very fast to me.
It would be nice if you could advance romances without having to have sex. I know there was that tongue-in-cheek "that's why we're all here" comment in one of the community updates, but that's not how all my characters see it.
I'd prefer to think it's just a one night stand than an actual romance, going by my experience with the let's bang scene for Astarion, SH and Lae.

I think you're right. It seems like the only romance that is really complete is the one with the drow lady, which makes sense. She is probably not gonna have any meaningful role later in the game so they could finish her romance for early access.
I think sometimes people see romance in a fantasy game as they would in RL, sitting at their homes and going out to meet a nice gal/guy. one possibility to think about (not saying its necessarily true) is that Larian, unlike other RPG games, got "romance" right. If we do not confuse "romance" with "love story/deep relationship" this is one way to look at it. Anyone whos been in RL in summer camp, probably knows how fast people who don't know each other previously can get to banging, in a matter of one, two three days. Now imagine a group of people, in a risk for their lives, not knowing if they survive the next day, living in the same camp day in and day out, a lot of them with issues, they have a party, they are scared/worried/ angry and kind of lonely, drunk, why not look for company, sharing a drink and sex? people in much less depressing and desperate situations do that in RL and a lot. Its not "Love story/ deep relationship of the ages" maybe its not even the classic "romance" but it happens, and it can be fine, not rushed or weird.
Now, I would have a bit of issue if these are the only companions in the game and *all of them behave the same way, are open sexualy and would look for sex to distract themselves or finish a party, just like in RL some people and companions should be different or more reserved or have other tastes and less of "fuck all" and "do what ever the fuck I want" mentality. But right now, for mostly evil and selfish type of companions (I personally didn't get this kind of reaction from Gale, but maybe his approval wasnt high enough) It can be seen as rather realistic and refreshing take on "romance" in games.
p.s
It is also a matter of taste and the companion personality, I remember in BG 2, I used to get so bored with Aerie's "deep and true love" and slow burn romance. While in Viconia's case, sometimes you would have sex very quickly (if you don't reject her) but it would lead to an amazing very complex, true and fascinating romance and journey

True. I romanced Shadowheart in my playthrough and in the day after she said it was a drunken mistake
True. I romanced Shadowheart in my playthrough and in the day after she said it was a drunken mistake
Yeah broke my heart lol. And then I got some snarky comment from Lae'zel cause I didn't want to spend the night with her instead
I do hope I get to romance her after the full release though!
There is a romantic scene with Gale. Actually, there are two of them. In the first scene that everyone seems to have missed, Gale teaches PC to touch the Weave. If you choose a romantic line in this scene, then later on the party the character and Gale may have sex.
I don't know exactly how to activate the Weave scene. I have it on Gale approval "very high" after I completed all the activities in Blighted Village. Also I played as a cleric, I don't know if this scene is possible for non magic classes.
P.S. English is not my native language, sorry for mistakes, if there are any.

Huh, I was wondering if it was even possible to romance Gale in EA, it's weird because I also have done all there was to do in the Blighted Village before moving on to goblin camp, his approval was for the longest time the highest of all my companions but I never had such a scene trigger for some reason. Do you remember the spot it was triggered at? Or was it more of - you do/kill someone and he gets an exclamation mark above his head? Cause honestly, for my ''good'' cleric it would've made more sense to romance Gale instead of Astarion, I actually wanted that to happen but he gave me a cold shoulder. I am curious as to how it plays out, cause come full release I won't be picking Gale at all as a traveling companion, mostly because I'm gonna be playing a sorcerer, don't need 2 arcane casters in a 4 man team, sadly. If only Larian let us have 6 man team instead of 4... I know it would make the game easier, but also they could scale up the difficulty of encounters... or do something to balance it out.
But also, I found another scene with Astarion this time around that I totally skipped during my 1st playthrough. Basically, 1st time you go to camp and Gale is admiring his own mirror image, and has this entire lecture about ceremorphosis, you can talk to Astarion about becoming a mind flayer and the way you wish to be killed. Then the scene I never had trigger for me, was when you get Lae to talk to that tiefling guy who saw other githyanki, you go to camp again after that and boom, Astarion is admiring stars talking about creche and you get to actually have some quality flirt time with him. Come full release I do hope all these scenes will trigger naturally, instead of having to go to camp every 5 minutes to make sure nobody hasn't got some cues to talk triggered... Like as of right now, way too many character and bond building scenes can be entirely missed. It really irritates me.
Totally agree. The reactions seemed natural to me. I've played through 30 hours in the game while I had that Tiefling party; and spent more than 10 nights in the camp with all that Tadpole talks and confrontations with the team as I chose to continue usage of Tadpole's power. The teammates reactions built and impression of something next to despair after we failed in all ways to get rid of the Tadpoles. And Tiefling party dialogues were mostly natural to me in the way too unfriendly conditions we were all the time. And justified also - Gale frequently approved occasional helping and dialogues with him were constantly progressing, Lae'zel dissapproved and didn't talk mostly, Wyll disapproved but he seems as a comparatively open person to share his "insides", Shadowheart was mostly approving and Astarion approved almost everything I did. So it aligned with the outcome where I can only choose between the last two.
I also played as rather rogue half-drow bitch with a fluent morality and unhealthy tendency to find amusement in killing and ruining all heart filling moments with all my companions and more. So, when I got an option to spend a night with Astarion ( who is actually the reason number one why I played as an addict all the days and nights since the EA release) it seemed pretty natural to me. He approved my actions a lot during the game, I had at least four situation-based dialogues with friendly or flirty moments ( since the very first dialogue to many more such as the dialogue about dead boar we've found; persuasion about his dream; second dialogue after first bite; BDSM scene with pain priest at Goblin Camp; dialogue after ruining goblin's sex; and especially when you forcing him to say "please" to have sex with me at Tiefling party (Available only if you choose the option "4. Knowing you - yes" after he says "...Is it too much of me to ask?" and requires persuasion though. Also its fun to see his reaction if you say "No" after persuaded him to say "please" - worth checking. Also try to ask him what about hugs after sex and then say that he is not that good - pretty funny as well. I've noticed that he is a character who is sometimes ok with a dialogue confrontation with you, and in some dialogues this opens him up a little bit better as a person that the way where you try to be liked by him, or just polite ))
And I am super-agree with the point that there is not the "Love of my life" stage of the story, it's just something which can be called as the very first step to it:
Shadowheart, in fact, agrees on something more that ordinary camp dialogue the very first time ( and it's not sex)
Lae'zel just considers sex as an occasional pleasure and behaves like it
Gale shares his story giving us a bit of trust credit which is justified after you repeatedly fed him with artifacts (??? don't know how to check approval rate - any clues?)
Wyll gives a friendly talk, nothing more to it. This is also fine after you saved the Tieflings just like he wanted.
Astarion (even if you don't play along his expectations) is really behaves like a manipulative narcissist, so he is scarcely likely able to "love" in higher senses at this stage, and seeks an occasional fun just like Lae'zel, but in his own style.
Anyway, it's all a big imho, but I was seeing this as a plot tie for an actual drama which we'll see in the next chapters only

My assumption about the activities in the village was wrong. It seems that the scene activated because of the approval and the number of nights in the camp. I loaded one of the early saves from the Druid Grove (before visiting the village), and teleported on the map, each time after that visiting the camp. As a result, the necessary dialogue with Gale appeared.
I don't know if it is important, but the dialogue appeared on 5-6 nights after the cambion's visit.
The dream character I made is hotter than any of the companions. They all have too much baggage. OK to fight as a team with but I don't wanna see any of them naked.

Alright, I might have to try reloading an earlier save and check if that would trigger it. Also, have you been using the tadpole powers much in that run of yours? Cause my first EA playthrough had 0 tadpole options taken. Makes me curious if that could also factor in that scene appearing. I find it a bit weird that if you don't use the tadpole at all, you never see the man/woman of your dreams from character creation. I'm hoping that Larian will include some tadpole dreams for good aligned people NOT using the thing at all. Like trying to tempt us into using it or something.
Looking at it in a narrative way, I do hope there are more tiers of progression than what we see before intimacy. In my first playthrough I had a male and my second a female. The initial options with Astarion were the same options. So my gender did not influence the relationship with him in any way. It was humorous to see UNDER CONSTRUCTION in some parts.
However, I would say it would be nice if there were 1 or 2 more layers to get through before then. It would just add a more natural progression.
Also, have you been using the tadpole powers much in that run of yours?
I did a few tests - with tadpole persuasion and dream after and without. In both cases I got a scene. But I may have used mind reading on Gale the first dialogue with him, I don't remember for shure. Maybe it affects somehow.
So, I run another test with new character. It seems to be enough to have a very high approval with Gale and spend 10 nights in the camp to get a scene with a romantic moment.
Here's my step-by-step action:
Shadowheart recruitment
Astarion recruitment
Gale recruitment
Reading Gale's thoughts (tadpole) in the dialog
Camp
Lae`zel recruitment
Camp
Battle at the gate, dialogue with Zevlor
Camp
Will recruitment
Camp
Dialogue dying True Soul dwarf
Camp
Get the dog
Camp
Teleport
Camp
Pet the dog until the approval with Gail reaches very high (I did not do this in a normal game passing, only for the test)
Teleport>Camp x3
The scene
P.S. Of course, I talked to Gale with each new dialog.
I don't know if the tadpole usage on Gale has any effect, I need to do another test to check, but it is too exhausting.
So, I run another test with new character. It seems to be enough to have a very high approval with Gale and spend 10 nights in the camp to get a scene with a romantic moment.
Here's my step-by-step action:
Shadowheart recruitment
Astarion recruitment
Gale recruitment
Reading Gale's thoughts (tadpole) in the dialog
Camp
Lae`zel recruitment
Camp
Battle at the gate, dialogue with Zevlor
Camp
Will recruitment
Camp
Dialogue dying True Soul dwarf
Camp
Get the dog
Camp

Ooh thanks, will deffo try that out!

Then it's obviusly the tadpole. I've done all the other stuff mentioned + feeding him the artifact, but no sign of any scene whatsoever. Or maybe it's race/class dependent?
Obviusly not using the tadpole leads to pretty lame experience regarding companions which is a pretty big developer's oversight IMO
You're all jumping from one stressful situation to another and might die in the morning. Someone just wanting to get off isn't that strange.
So, I created another character - rogue half elf. No tadpole usage at all, but it`s still worked. I went straight to the dog, abuse the approval, when after some teleport>camp>teleport>camp spam I get the scene.
In total I get it in my normal game (high elf, cleric, tadpole) and in two tests (human, wizard, tadpole and half-elf, rogue, no tadpole)
But my friend in the middle of her playthrough, can' t get a scene, no matter what she does.
Maybe it is some kind of bug.
P.s. It is eniugh just "high" approval with Gale. I tested it too.

Maybe there are some "wrong turns" (destroying the book?) in his relationship or it's really just a bug. I've got exceptional approval with him on my drow Ranger - can't get anything out of the guy
I think the romance option starts too forced, you barely know anyone and out of nowhere .... Would you like to spend the night with me? and all companions comment you are realy close... Ehmm did i miss something ?

We'll Astarion is the only one really like this and it fits the character perfectly. Shadowheart really just wants to talk to the PC which is the equivalent of flirt (+kiss which is optional) if you ask me.
The dialoge changes a lot depending in whom you speak to first - I agree though if you first talk to Astarion and accept his advances everyone will come accross as a molester.
I agree that the romance feels very half baked at the moment. Well just have to wait and see.
All I want is to actually someday see fully erect penis on penis action in such video games.

You know I was starting to doubt this even exists but now somebody uploaded it on
YoutubeNow if we only knew what everyone else is currently doing wrong. Only other unexplored variable that I can think of is: did you let Astarion bite the PC (since his cutscene should trigger on the way to the dog) and did you trigger Gale's death scene somewhere along the way before getting to the weave scene?
The bite from Astarion does not block the scene. I had it with and without the bite event. My friend and I concluded that the Weave scene comes after Gale confessed that he had to absorb the artifacts powers, but before the PC gives him an artifact.
But that's just a guess.

You romanced the dog?
WTF
Beggars can't be choosers.

Hmm, and yet i got the Weave scene after giving him 2 items and witnessing his death.
But i did spend a lot of time at camp. Like, after every battle. Took a lot of camping to get the scene.
Shadow Heart looks humble in Act 1, but it has a lot of potential. I hope for the disclosure of this character in the release, it is not in vain that she, the cleric of Shar, looked with interest at the execution of the hero from the cultist of pain in the goblin camp.
I will definitely romance her, but the first playthrough I will choose Mintara, she is the perfect couple and party member for an evil character. Shadow Heart is more neutral.
There is a chance that the final version will include not only these, but also other previously unknown girls. We will wait for the release, I hope all the romances will be deep, with a lot of content and interesting stories
By the way, the Vampire Elf is a great character, I think the girls will like it

Astarion is my favorite, at this point 0 interest in Gale or Wyll. Wyll isn't evil enough and Gale is too much hassle.
