The music is lackluster. - 17/10/20 11:18 PM
In Divinity: Original Sin 2, practically every single track had this amazing weight to it. They evoked a sense of wonder, perseverance, suspicion, power, adventure, paranoia, etc.
I've spent the past few years humming some of the tunes, and for me, the "Rivellon" track in particular is one of the biggest triumphs in gaming history when it comes to music and sound design.
It's beautiful, haunting, powerful, and brave, and I've spent so much time just standing aboard The Lady Vengeance in Act II just listening to it on a loop.
Now, of course, I understand that we're in Early Access. There's a lot of ground that we've yet to cover and situations we've yet to find ourselves in, but the only memorable tracks to me are the main theme and battle music.
In every other area that I've explored, the music doesn't feel as punchy, or impactful. As it stands now (and of course it could certainly change,) there isn't a tune that I'll be humming for years.
It feels very... generically orchestral.
All of this really hit me when I watched The Symphony of Sin stream at the 2020 Game Music Festival.
Every single track from D:OS2 was recreated beautifully and walked me through a whole range of emotions.
In Part II when the BG3 tracks came up to bat, it felt like all of the energy got sucked out of the room. It felt like I was on the phone and listening to the hold music for an upscale hotel.
I know that it's kind of a moot point since the music is likely already done and decided. I guess I just wanted to vent my frustration with a game that I've otherwise found to be an excellent experience.
I hope that the rest of the game that we haven't seen yet has music that's just as good, if not better than D:OS2 had.
