Did you ever tried to use the Ball to play with Scratch at the Githyanke Battle at the Bridge.
Its so funny what you can do with the Ball and Scratch running up to fetch it.
Those Githyanke can even be hit so hard they get pushed over.
Do it while invisible or in Sneakmode to make the msot out of it.

That is some serious Trick to use anywhere you please.

Absolutly, and not in all camps.
When in a new minicamp area Scratch WONT be there to play ball and does not find the way to you. Seems those mini camps arent a part of the whole world yet... code wise. Can be fixed i guess.
But beware when you throw the ball onto people who are friendly, like ZHENTARIM. They dont seem to like beeing hit with a ball.

No, the ball knocked him over, hit him so hard with it. then Scratch came to fetch the ball for you so u can rinse and repeat

Wait, how do you get Scratch to leave his dead friend?

You have to either use Speak with Animals or pass an Animal Handling check, show him you mean no harm and get him to sniff your hand. He will still stay with his friend, but probably on the next time you go to your camp he will have showed up after following your scent.

He will periodically find things and bring them to you at camp. One of them will be a ball that you can throw and he will fetch it for you.

Oh, and if you fail the animal handling check when you find him, you could have someone else in the party try it.

I talked to him with speak with animals and told him his friend was dead, so I may have failed it. I did get the "Leave me alone" response from him.

Yeah, you want to be a little softer with it, instead saying if he doesn't wake up follow.
