Why there are 2 portraits visible at all times (huge-a** portrait in the bottom), and in combat there are 3 portraits? No other game like this (turn-based RPG with top view) needs 3 portraits. One (side) at all times and 2 in battle are enough.
Map is HUGE and visible at all times.
2 lines with icons (why not 1 line, as in DOSII), additional line (3rd) above with indicators, additional line (4th) on the bottom with full-on text (Common, Fighter, Items, etc.) - WHY, make it a single line, adjustable, no clutter.
Empty space of the UI, HUGE circles (3rd portrait and "Turn").
Why are you trying to make it so much "different" from best UIs that already exist?
At least, give people the tools to change the UI (through modding).

Good question.

Probably for the same reason they refuse to get rid of the abysmal chain party movement that other games have done much better for decades.
