I stoped counting on 1853 bugs (j/k) anyway there are so many bugs in this game this is the buggiest game I ever played .. I mean when you're in dialog with some one and the NPC's voice changes or a female talking with male voice with male portret or stuipid NPC's who forgot that they already selled you the key or given you the quest or when you newer ever mentiond to a NPC over a quest he thinks he already gave you it and gives you the reward or the BF after you finish the game don't work at all!!! and maaaaaaany more minor bugs ... don't you think this game has so many bugs even the pach I downloaded is buggy so i had to re-install my game

I rename this game into [color:"orange"] Beyond Buggysity !!!

I'm on Act3 and I can safely say I haven't encountered any bugs besides the actchange bug for windows98 (which is now fixed I've read)... I've been playing since version 1.42 onwards...

most bugs in games are caused by a not so stable system with the lack of the latest drivers.
It all depends on how up-to-date your systems are.

is it virus free? (with the latest virus definitions)
is it spyware free? (with teh latest reg-files installed)
do you have th elatest drivers of your videocard?
have you installed the latets directX9 version?
do you have the latest soundcard drivers
computer bios updates.
defragmentated your harddisk?
Did you do a scandisk lately.
did you used the latest windows updates?
do you have adminitration right on winXp, because otherwize the patch could not install properly.

As Tovi mentioned the only real bug I had was the win98 act changing bug, but that's fixed now.

I did have a the prob with the arrows in my inventory getting mixed up. I was firing normal arrows and doing poison damage!! Bring back that bug!!!

Also encounter that guy talking like a woman...butch lesbian bug?

Wonderful, Plowking <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> - bu... errhm... features I would like back are:

Stealing holy water at pickpocket lvl 1
stealing quest items or at least keys
overpowered splitting arrows
duplicating crystals
dumb enemy IQ, not reacting if I kill in sneak&hit, but deciding to die in a heroic stoic way instead of pestering me with a counter attack
unlimited sharpening at lvl 1
over-expensive splitting arrows if I choose to be honest for a while (of course, only when I sell them back)
a very old "feature" from Div => unlimited charms due to multiple panes
the duplication bug in general

Kiya <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

I have encountered several bugs - but except the BF prob in a few patch versions (fixed by now) - nothing really destroyed my game or decreased my fun.

it was an overpowered skill, Viper - you go up by +4 agility per level now. So, be careful, ok? this is a fix <grmbl>

yeah thanks, but those things should be warned and ESPECIALLY if you lose the ability to use that weapon then.

anyway, an in-depth guide of the skills is sth Larian Studios should make ASAP and put it online ASAPm, preferably a PDF document

Mushroom Cave Quest Game Killer.
Imp Hero Lock Up...Twice
Kiya the Witch lock up on first appearance
Random Voice Switching. I especially liked it when a Ranaar shopkeeper would sometimes develop an indian accent that was used at no other point in the game <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> )
Bone Spear Rings
Heavy Accessories
Picture Switching on act change
Brightness setting changing back to default on act change
Unique/Set items not being unique (is it a bug or is it a feature...either way they are lame and unsellable)
Set items morphing into something else on act change.
Empty Battlefield Dungeon
Passive stationary monsters
Automap blacking out again
Rescued from spider Imp, the screen jumped from village to Spider web.
Thirsty Prisoner being very picky...bug or feature...YOU DECIDE!
Getting stuck outside the walls...Twice
Monsters getting stuck outside the walls..ALL THE TIME!
Instant Kill with no warning traps... Bug or just bad game design?
Angry Frogs, Tibars, Snails etc Bug or just a bad idea?
Battlefields teleport and Necromancer teleports conflicts.
Out of order quest dialogues, in other words being talked to as if we had already spoke.
Archer Quest bug, even after it had been fixed 3 times
Dead and Alive Imp Shaman, because he ran towards me and was killed before I'd crossed the dialogue trigger point on the map. He instantly died again after he stood up and spoke to me.
Never ending quests, both in the battlefields and in the main game. Assassins was in there until act change as was get the amulet for the shopkeeper in acts 3 and 4.
Graphical problems on armour, Head sticking out the back of Helms, Rannaar leggings not appearing the body, having to manually add and remove boots since click to wear didn't update the visuals.
All the various skill bugs such as not correctly increasing damage, Summoning dolls not gaining their levels etc.

There are probably a few more I've forgotten. Okay they fixed some, but that's beside the point since I encounted all these with a heavily patched 1.32. They should have been no bugs by that point. I'd hate to have played version 1.00.

And yeah, some aren't bugs but they should be as they are terrible design ideas!

Heavy Accessories => fixed
Unique/Set items not being unique => could be sold after act change, in every version!
Set items morphing into something else on act change. => only the name, stats remained
Thirsty Prisoner being very picky...bug or feature => I decide "feature"
Instant Kill with no warning traps... Bug or just bad game design? => [color:"yellow"]I think no bug - but unfriendly towards gamers, as I have no chance to avoid it on containers - I do, if a trap is on the ground
Angry Frogs, Tibars, Snails etc Bug or just a bad idea => [color:"yellow"]would like this changed, though I could work around it
Picture Switching on act change=> yes, I had that - but always failed to see the prob some gamers had with this. Where did it harm?
Archer Quest bug, even after it had been fixed 3 times => the early log entry? Where did it harm?
Rescued from spider Imp, the screen jumped from village to Spider web => correct, still existing bug. where does it harm?
graphical probs with armour => I couldn't see my sandals on my char, "ventilation" helmets existed, didn't bother me, why? I had the boosts listed, so what?

Version 1.0 was unplayable at a certain point - German version had 9 patches until 1.45 and I played most of them (switching to English from 1.42 on) => a lot has been fixed meanwhile, Ben. I can understand your point of dissatisfaction, but I would have liked to see your posts, if the game had remained on 1.32 status. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" />

[color:"yellow"]No, I'm talking about bugs harming my game play, Ben - depriving me of XP - or crashes - or plot stoppers. I'm talking about 1.44 now and ONLY 1.44, as the earlier versions are history: I have a few quests, I'd like fixed, that's all. I had no stopper, crashes etc. maybe our definition of the word "bug" is different - ok. And if so => please, give me your definition, so I can understand.
Kiya

So, if you still encounter bugs - please, differ between BF and in-game - and please, list those you still suffer from. I had some of those you mentioned myself and listed them in yellow - but not the others, maybe due to the fact, I avoided BF.

Maybe due to the fact that my system is defragmented regularly, updated in drivers, has enough RAM. Maybe due to the fact that I install offline, read all patch fixes, make a lot of different saves and therefore can reload easily. Maybe due to the fact that I define bug in a more tolerant way. Maybe due to the fact that if I buy a game, I take what is given as an axiom and try to cope with it, instead of wanting the game to be tailored as I understand a game. Maybe because I consider myself as a gamer and not a semi-Dev.

I can't speak for Ben, but my definition of a bug is anything that doesn't work as designed. There are several degrees of bug severity, but a bug is still a bug even if it's as minor as a typo. Items changing names, but not stats, is still a bug even if it doesn't "harm" the user. Items that can't be sold until an act change is still a bug. Everything listed by Ben, with the exception of a couple suspect design decisions, are bugs.

Can you tell me where I can find an official definiton of the word "bug", please? And where is the line drawn, between a bug occuring due to the PC/OS (a singular one) and one touching all or a majority?

From dictionary.com

bug ( P ) Pronunciation Key (bg)
n.
A true bug.
An insect or similar organism, such as a centipede or an earwig. See Regional Note at lightning bug.

A disease-producing microorganism: a flu bug.
The illness or disease so produced: “stomach flu, a cold, or just some bug going around” (David Smollar).

A defect or difficulty, as in a system or design.
Computer Science. A defect in the code or routine of a program.
An enthusiasm or obsession: got bitten by the writing bug.
An enthusiast or devotee; a buff: a model train bug.
An electronic listening device, such as a hidden microphone or wiretap, used in surveillance: planted a bug in the suspect's room.

As far as a bug that only occurs with specific systems/configs, well, that could be system instability or whatever, or it could be some sort of compatibility issue that the game has with particular hardware. May end up being a video card driver issue (most often), but it could be a bug with the game.

then I will list the "bugs" Ben named and I didn't have (or had) and found, they were fixed in later versions.

Mushroom Cave Quest Game Killer. [color:"orange"]=> nope, never
Imp Hero Lock Up...Twice [color:"green"]=> game stopped in an early version, by clicking on my hero's portait, game continued. Did not encounter it after... hm... 1.42?
Kiya the Witch lock up on first appearance [color:"orange"]=> nope - she did not appear in German version 1.0, was fixed in 1.1 - but this is something different, right?
Random Voice Switching [color:"yellow"]=> can't confirm or deny, I play in silence
Bone Spear Rings [color:"yellow"]=> in an early BF version, did not delve into BF in later versions - but I know, this exists => in the BF
Heavy Accessories [color:"green"]=> FIXED! What's the point in repeating a fixed bug?
Picture Switching on act change [color:"green"]=> fixed, according to a patch list - but I never even saw it as a bug, thought this should indicate act change
Brightness setting changing back to default on act change [color:"orange"] => nope
Passive stationary monsters [color:"orange"]=> nope, not my in-game, maybe in BF?
Getting stuck outside the walls...Twice [color:"orange"]=> yep, in earlier versions, nope now (since 1.42?)
Dead and Alive Imp Shaman [color:"orange"]=> nope, never
Never ending quests, both in the battlefields and in the main game [color:"yellow"]=> correct, if Ben means quests remaining blue - this is what I call a bug and would like to have fixed. Same goes for missing entries I have known from the German version
All the various skill bugs such as not correctly increasing damage, Summoning dolls not gaining their levels etc. [color:"yellow"]=> can't confirm or deny - as I don't work with dolls or keep track of damage.

I didn't take all - as I don't play BF, but I know these exist (read the forum closely)
Kiya

Ok, I took 13 bugs => 3 were fixed - 6 I never had/not in recent versions -2 I don't know of -

Remains a part I consider very important => the quest part and the bugs I read about, mainly dealing with BF (which don't bug me but annoy BF fans).

In case you wonder, why I count raisins here (a German phrase for being very narrow-minded) => I have encountered a bug hysteria - mainly in the English Forum. And if this continues and if it continues to boil within me => I will start to list a thread of ALL "bugs",due to gamer incapability! And then I will like to see which "bug" list will be longer! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" />

If the gamer, starting this thread here, has encountered 18xx bugs within 3 days of game play and is NOT able to find the talking skull at his 2nd go <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> - or a gamer cries "bug", because he missed a lever, a hint or can't cope with linearity or is not able to find this/that => I'm asking myself this: WHERE is a patch for brains? If a gamer cries "bug", because he "acquired an item" - but is not capable of keeping his/her inventory tidy and therefore says, there was no item - if a gamer cries "bug", because he missed the disguise armour thingy in act 1 - if a gamer cries "bug", because he got a bone instead of a yellow gem and doesn't realise, this is Larian humour - if a gamer cries "bug" because he wants automatic attack mode for both chars and the game design is different => do I have the possibility to chuck them back on the shelf to rot? No, <sigh> guess not. Or maybe yes? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

What I really wish => is a decent bug list, separated in BF and in-game. Bugs which are an error in the code or program - quest bugs - stoppers - real crashes (not due to a neglected OS/local machine)

and last not least => I wish for gamers asking, if the prob they are having "might - only might" be due to them and not automatically due to the game. And I could rely on them having the last patch and not keeping all patch versions in mind to guess, with which version they are playing.

In reference to my post. Apart from the few gripes about traps and such like, they are all bugs, whether they stopped the gameplay or not. Stuff like typos and graphical gliches might not cripple the game but they represent a lack of polish and are not working how they should. There are more to bugs than just CTDs.

Kiya you are very forgiving if you played from version 1.00 and still support the game as being relatively bugfree/playable. I gather from your other posts that you have a very cautious old school approach to RPGS. I certainly remember a time when I was carefully mapping out Bards Tale style games and writing copious notes. But that was nearly 20 years ago and the technology and quality standards have moved on. I shouldn't need to plan out what to do and in which order if the game pushes itself as a freeform experience...the game should be robust enough to handle anything I throw at it that doesn't involved modding the code. Yes many bugs were fixed but most games receive 1 or 2 patches in their lifetime and I'm not being unrealistic either since that usually holds true. Larian really dropped the ball on this one I feel.

Also FYI the Kiya bug in case you are interested. I was walking back to the entrance to the compound and I clicked on the Jobs Signpost to see if something had changed. My pc walked up to it and read the sign and Kiya appeared at the same time. When I closed the signpost text box it just stopped. NPCs carried on moving but it sat there as if the cutscene was going to happen but it never did. REBOOT!

EDIT - Kiya, The thread did ask for bugs "encountered". Though some have been fixed now, they caused me enough grief in my game for me to remember them -

EDIT EDIT - Kiya, just reread you comment about your attitude to a game you buy. I feel you are way to tolerant of poor workmanship. We are giving OUR money to take this product, and if it's not working correctly it is perfectly in the customers right to complain. It's not a freebie. I worked nearly a whole day to earn sufficent money to buy this game. I will complain if it is lousy with bugs. I thought it was the English who had the 'mustn't grumble' attidue towards bad service! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> Now I will agree with you that many so called bug reports are usually because some diff can't operate a keyboard and mouse, or they had ICQ and Mcafee running in the background. It's usually the state of the art polygon stuff like Farcry where some kid hasn't installed the latest drivers that causes problems. BD hasn't had many like that at all there were far more geniune bugs listed than fake bugs.

Oh yeah, add to the list the duplicating protection gems bug
